Uh, Slackware has sudo as well you know.

BTW I'm mentioned to Maurice Kinal quite some time ago that
I had thought to edit the init file to shutoff the network card on boot.
  
Maurice didn't seem to think it's necessary so I deferred to his judgment.

It was a likely enough error when overtired I was likely to mistype exit 
and not notice.

No big deal and I managed to get the Nvidia up to speed I've not
previously seen in the bargain.

Win - Win all around.

Hey I caught it on reboot after following your advice so then undid 
all the damage.

Some of these stinking rootkits are getting better atr social engineering
and this one gave me an alternative to entering root password but had I bit on
that it would have opened up my system for exploit.

But that would have required me reboot with the cable modem powered.

Time consuming but rather a simple fix and I'm golden again.
As I said above better than before.

So many files to edit however only one of the files in the a base series
really required a recompile as it was a malware tainted binary.

It's a LOUSY idea.
I figure to look into the system map tomorrow and rebuild that to the 
original default.

You call it troubleshooting when a after market driver splash screen
clobbers you before you can even enter the BIOS?

To each their own.

Easy fix now I've been around the block, goodbye Nvidia driver and hello
tweaking the original as now Xine running in KDE is operating better
than at the command line.

Who are you referring to?

This computer was a gift from the manager of this apartment
and right now it's up to speed with the far better Gateway Performance
450 I had despite being a year older and not having parity checking memory.

Mplayer will outdo the superior server class old Gateway I used to have
after  just a few more tweaks.

Blows the door of their 2 year old Dell running Win XP.

Life is good.
