I cannot be fully disabled, onboard and auto are the only options
to chose from and auto sets up both.

The card's is back in now and I suspect I'll be able to boot
to CD-ROM simply by switching to onboard video and also don't think
this will destroy the file system as was the case with the Nvida
driver when I had installed that.

In any event when I test _that_ hypothesis I'll be sure to modify
fstab and lilo to reflect hda3 where I've a second
install of Slack thus protecting my primary and configured
Slack on hda1

Tell you what my big problem with this machine is is that when
IBM sold to Lenovo apparently they didn't want to keep the
web site support for the previous lines up so there's zip for 
infomation on this system on the internet.

Especially curious about the 10 position DIP switch.

Gateway ( Acer) OTOH has kept its files available and they are 
remakably detailed.
Punch in a Gateway units serial number and you get every imaginable
detail of the system you could ever want as to how it shipped
and what capibilities it has.
