Ärende: RE: NVIDIA
==================
WC> WC>Not only was my installation onto hda3 completely flawless
WC> WC>but the BIOS now reflects Nvidia *only* thus my work around
WC> WC>worked in tailoring the xorg.conf's for Nvidia alone
WC> WC>whereas left to it's own devices Linux recognised both cards
WC> WC>leading to the conflict and severe file damage.

WC> JB> So the Nvidia BIOS didn't corrupt your hard drive all by itself
WC> JB> and screw up the MBR. Otherwise placing a new copy of the OS on
WC> JB> any of your hda partitions would have had the same result, right
WC> JB> ?

WC>Completely and uttrerly WRONG but expected.

WC>hda1 picked up BOTH video cards upon loading.

WC>Due to my work around with the three pared down xorg.conf*
WC>files and putting them in prior to booting the *second time*
WC>I noted the same problem following Mr. Cassell's exact instructions
WC>to reboot to the original AGP ATI Pro Rage Mach 64 video card.

WC>Kicker is you have to boot it twice which WAS required due to the
WC>fact Ross's advice was terrible and *that* unterly corrupted
WC>the ext3 FS on hda1.

WC>Following my protcol of subbing the xorg files I'd created
WC>onto hda3's /etc/X11/xorg.* before tjhe second reboot caused
WC>the installation to only recognise the Nvidia card alone while
WC>it is in fact impossible to remove the Mach 64, it's on the
WC>motherboard. and a second boot before I had done this would have
WC>scrambled the file system completely again.

WC>This in fact was what I expected from Ross's advice but I
WC>was wondering just how long it might take me to recover
WC>from such advice, so the heck with it I gave it a shot.

WC>Completely off the net for 16 hours, thereafter unstable
WC>until I followed my original ridiculed protocols I posted here which
WC>worked perfectly.

WC>Oh yes and Maurice Kinal in private email told me my protocols
WC>were fine in that he and I both knew no harm could come from them
WC>and indeeed they worked just fine on the reinstallation on
WC>partition 3

WC>My mistake if you want to call it that was following Ross's advice
WC>which produced exactly what I had expected, a corrupt file system.
WC>Somewhat entertaining and educational.

WC>The ONLY way I can safely boot to hda1 now is to mount it /mnt
WC>then cp -a /etc/X11/xorg.* /mnt/etc/x11/
WC>Then I could go back to that partition safely.

WC>Clear?

Very and was before you started. The issue ended up being a driver
issue on your OS build on hda1. You fixed it on your new build on hda3.
So, as we have said all along, the issue is not the BIOS of the Nvidia
card corrupting your hard drive.

On a separate note, I saw you and Tim exchanging messages about computer
parts. If you need something, I have 3-4 old Pentium and Athlon class
machines in the basement I may likely toss out soon. If you need/want
parts, let me know what you are looking for. I'll box it up and send it
along.
