Ärende: All better now
======================
On or about 12-31-09 10:48, WAYNE CHIRNSIDE allegedly uttered "Re: All better
now" to JAMES BRADLEY:

 JB> that I am @canada.com.

WC> Ah, I get LOTS of spam at my tertiary email address, it's
 WC> what it's for.

I made the mistake of publishing it unmodified in fido, forgetting that a
repository of each message exists that is accessible to the web. <Cha-G> Then,
I was stupid enough to think their "Report Spam" button was going to do
something productive about it. Productive; that it expounded the quantity!

WC> You are now among the very few that have my Gmail address.

I do get to to my web based accounts infrequently at best and when I'm there,
I'm usually exhausted from trying to find drivers/modules/specs, to do much
more than delete spam.

 WC> You left handed?

Left hipped, more like it. <L>

 JB> I lost a gratis DU
JB> connection in '03, and refused to pay for the infernal thing when I can
JB> do the things I need to at a few sites for free.

WC> Well it's $32.95/Month here but well worth it for gauranteed
 WC> 768K and most usually 1,200K.

That kinda money goes to gear, here. Had a pretty good year with that regard.
Too bad I had to scratch it all up with "theft prevention" markings, as all of
it was "like new" before it moved in.

JB> I think the traffic here was trying to identify the culprit. <L>

WC> Some of the traffic here was the culprit.

Even *if* off target, (Hi Ross! B-) most of it was a concerted effort to
troubleshoot. The small amount to belittle should be expected - by now? <G+D>

WC> No big deal, I was looking to clean up my installation
WC> and now following my own instincts based upon my own observations
WC> I've cleared most of the issues I had with the Nvidia card.

Well, there you go! "In order to clean up, you've got to make a mess," still
applies.

WC> I certainly do now know what NOT to do ;-)

That's progress! <LOL>

WC> Slack 13 goes onto my next install on this drive once the kernel
WC> supports Nvidia as they've made their driver open source for Linux.

If it's not part of the bundled kernel, you could always strap in the latest. I
recall reading that odd numbered releases are experimental, so if you make the
effort, you might want to dial back to the even numbered release.

WC> I *like* working these sorts of things out, keeps the mind sharp
WC> due to the nature of the way Linux is laid out.

Yup, it does! <EG> When my time on a shovel had to be curtailed, was roughly
the time my first "compatible" rolled in the door. It was a EISA box, so I had
a revealing crash course on resources with an excellent tutor in the setup
program.

WC> I expect to save on the motherboard by buying one that only
WC> supports USB 2.0 once they're released with USB 3.0

As did I, on the 64-b AMD. (I haven't a clue what they named the CPU.)
Everybody *needed* the dual-core Intel systems, is when I tossed my
"umbrella-anchor" into the wave for a core system that I could throw into a
scratched rack-mount case procured from auction. Now, I am trying to scrounge a
SATA drive from a Maxtor - push this button to back-up your Wind-Blows HD -
external case, that only worked right when the wind blew out of the West, and
the rivers were oh, so high....

WC> Hey, kept it short in my email response due to being on the first cup
WC> of coffee and dead tired this morning.

I just swilled the second espresso, and it's already 6pm. At least I *think*
I'm sufficiently recovered from my Nov-Dec.

WC> georgous 21 inch CRT monitor some clown tossed in the trash.

The last 21" fell off my bench into the hands of an old friend. It was old
enough, that it didn't matter if it fell off his bench too. I've one with an
over active bias I've been meaning to dig further into, but with all the logic
controls to it - I suspect, as POTs looked rare on cursory inspection - it
might be a tosser if some info doesn't surface soon.

WC> I've looked and cannot find anyone making or offering new CRT monitors
WC> for sale and I just cannot imagine going to flat screen until
WC> the resolutions supported are a bit over twice what they
 WC> are now.

... And dead pixels, and dust bunnies between the light and the screen, and....

WC> This Gateway VX1110 CRT monitor ROCKS!

As long as it's not a Dell or NEC, it should be serviceable too!

WC> I only just a few weeks ago repaired it but Sony's tend to use
WC> Mil spec parts so can be quite difficult to repair if one
WC> uses a standard transistor substitution guide with such _repairs_
WC> lasting only a few days or weeks in the cases I've observed.

I'd have never factored in the tolerance until you mention it.

WC> I used to know offhand the name of a distributor that offered such
 WC> Mil Spec parts.

I downloaded a salvage company catalog years ago - maybe a decade ago, now -
that I recall had some esoteric equipment and parts. They'd likely be out of it
by now. A Google search might be in order.

... I'm objective. I object to everything.
