Ärende: do do do, a da da da
============================
On or about 03-01-10 14:57, Maurice Kinal allegedly uttered "do do do do do do,
oh, ye" to James Bradley:

MK> You got me to thinking of what video from here could be streamed
MK> without causing any grief for anyone, expecially me. The only

Legalities...

MK> the greater San Francisco area by someone in the education
MK> system there as examples of what she is doing, one of which
MK> is a short 'film' some children put together with clay
MK> figures they obviously constructed. Another one was a test
MK> of a new camera she bought which is a jpeg motion dealie of
MK> some weird bird in the San Fancisco zoo.

The local got me worried, but it sounds like she is legit. <L>

MK> So far I haven't really created anything but have contributed a few
MK> parts to a project my neighbour is working on involving a telescope
MK> and a security camera someone abandoned there awhile ago.
MK> It is broken as far as normal security camera activities
MK> are concerned but the main mission critical optical parts
MK> are fine. The issue he is currently having is coupling the
MK> camera to the telescope but we do know that it can work as
MK> we tested it out the other day. We used a mobile DVD
 MK> player monitor with a TV-out (rca, composite, whatever-you-
MK> call-it) connection straight to the camera to assist the
MK> focussing while he held the camera to the eyepiece holder
MK> dealie. It worked. However as is I don't see it being all
MK> that pratical no matter what he aims the telescope at,
MK> nevermid astonomical targets which I highly doubt is the real goal.

[I'll leave this intact in case other might join.]

Legally, I do believe privacy laws prevent one from steering an optical device
into someone's window, so I'm glad to hear you and/or Paul have higher aims. As
far as pointing it at a straight, I wonder if you might get into trouble by
accidently having a crew-cabin port cross your field of view. Should you focus
on an eagle nest on the neighbouring island, I doubt there should be any
complications.

MK> I think I usb camera replacing the eyepiece would solve
MK> everything including powering. As for digitizing and/or
MK> streaming the signal mplayer/mencoder would be the way to
MK> go. Other than that mounting it and aiming it at something
MK> interesting worth streaming would be the next logical step.

MK> Any suggestions? Paul was talking about aiming it at the channel
MK> between here and Gabriola Island. Personally I can just go look
MK> and see it without all this jiggery-pokery but others might
 MK> find it amusing.

It's been *far* too long ago that I studied optics, and I never achieved any
proficiency when at my best. Ray Maxwell might be worth a Google on the
subject. I might get a glance at his website address before I send this, but
there ought to be a mention of it on leoville.[something].

PS: maxwellmultimedia.com

My knee-jerk reaction is too, to remove the eyepiece and replace the objective
with the lens on the camera, but thinking it through, I take the CCD and lens
en masse to replicate our vision system. If you remove the objective lens from
your telescope, you are now reducing yourself to to the equivalent of looking
into a large magnifying glass.
