Hello Maurice!

I figured out what I don't like about Slack 13.

It's got a lot of the geeky stuff all mixed up with the GUI desktop now.

My main interest has been at the command line but with attention to getting
the desktop usable by other disabled persons so they could rid themselves
of Windows and be done with all that nonsense.

I know eight computer users in the same or similar shape to that I am in
in my immediate vicinity, three in this very building.
Plus another three that require Kmag just to read a screen.

Slack 12.2 was right there in KDE where I could configure it to come
naturally to a Windows user where they wouldn't get put off.

Now some of the geek has leaked into the desktops and it took me a few days
to tumble to it.

I guess for setting up others I must now look to other distributions.
Oh well.

Either that or perhaps I can find a GUI guide to adding things like docking
to the taskbar as so far anything I invoke stays invoked when minimized as
it does but there's no indication of it in the task bar :-(

It took top at the command line for me to figure out the deal there.
No indication on the desktop it's still running yet top showed it clear as
day.

One thing Slack 13 at the desktop level that does do a far better job is
playing videos on demand like Windows users are accustomed to.

The one super thing is the new kernel, it really does handle my video card
MUCH better.

startx works as user now too where it didn't for me in 12.2 so when I exit
the desktop my real memory resources return, that's sweet.

Previously I'd had to invoke kdm as root and that used up a LOT of my 1998
computer's resources.

The one disappointment is so far is Multimail-0.49 has failed to compile on
make.
First time that has happened.

I'll work it out.

Open Office should be no problem and I'm installing that to be compatible
with all the other word processors out there even though it suffers from
about 1000 percent over bloat.

So all in all Slack 13.0 solves ALL my problems with this old machine
but as I say for setting it up for others not so technically inclined in
like circumstances to myself is going to be a bear as compared to 12.2.

I now see I'm going to have to keep up with the latest stable kernels as I
gained a lot with this upgrade.

So that's the deal with me and sticking half and half with desktop
environments, to assist others that just plain don't have the time or
interest to invest in learning Linux.

I HATE providing tech support for Windows users, especially when they 
DON'T LISTEN and I wind up having to fix the same thing over and over.

Like John swapping around his USB port keyboard connector with other
peripherals and wondering why the ATX power supply and computer appear dead.

TWICE now and the first time I told him to take masking tape and MARK THEM.
Too much trouble I guess.

I need to start charging for these services!
Except they're all in similar circumstance to me so I'm an easy touch
for free service calls.

Oh and the latest crisis?
I'm out of coffee :-
