I don't hate it but have discovered over the years most of what I want and find
extremely useful is written in straight c.  When I first *had* to learn c I
wasn't all that enamoured with it.  It took many years before I saw the light. 
I even wrote most of what ended up on my home based PC - a 386 with a whopping
16M drive and 2M of ram - all in straight c.

Even wrote a 'BBS', which was more of an online database then a Fido-like BBS
but operationally was very BBS-ish, so that I could upload code (mostly) from a
remote.  It became a statistical door thingy on a real BBS later on that could
generate random numbers based on certain criteria (weighted averages).  I think
the sysop there REALLY wanted it to generate lottery numbers for himself based
on historical winning numbers.  Beats me if it ever paid off for him.  I
learned quite a bit about networking over phone lines from it all.

So far g++ has only been useful for some multimedia apps ... and of course GUI
crap.

I am using the kernel's SUN12x22 fonts on a 17" monitor with no need for
magnification.  Requires a lilo append line that looks like;

append = "fbcon=font:SUN12x22"

I highly recommend it.

That might help out with the office stuff since you'll probably need some of
the gnome libs which I believe are already included with Slackware but not the
whole enchelada.

A capture card on cable will work.

AH!  Yeah edit /etc/group and give yourself access to at least video and audio
groups.  For example mine says;

-----------------------------------------------------------
audio:x:17:root,maurice
video:x:18:root,maurice
-----------------------------------------------------------

Also gave myself some access to some other groups but the above should be the
minimum for xorg.
