=================================
Sounds like an Invitation to disaster to me wayne. Computers require
precision regulation of the various voltages. you will NOT get that from
the device you are talking about rewinding a torroid on.

WC> MK> A good battery makes a HUGE difference. I am starting to see some ATX
WC> MK> power supplies advertised that can either boot from AC or DC. Quit

WC>I a while back was thinking of rolling my own.
WC>There's a thrift shop nearby that has an inexpensive car stereo amplifier
WC>booster with a heavy
WC>amperage laminated core torroid in it that would be ideal for this purpose.

WC>Just rewind the core to match the output of an _existing_ normal 120V power
WC>supply
WC>to output the proper voltages and substitute it for the existing torroid in
WC>conventional power supply
WC>and you're done and ready to operate off of 12 volts.

WC>Just throw out all the circutry after the torroid but keep the huge heat sin
WC>the driver
WC>transistors are on and hook that bad boys output up to the existing
WC>conventional supplies voltage regulators.

WC>I figure at the claimed rated output the output windings are the ones needin
WC>rewinding as at the claimed power
WC>output they'd have to be plus and minus 40 - 45 volts at the rails

WC>Really a trivial project.

WC>I strongly expect the resulting power supply would easily drive a quad core
WC>box and if I were really
WC>ambitious I could redesign the driver circuitry to be even more efficient si
WC>this is an old unit and
WC>a power FET driver circuitry would be far more efficient and require much le
WC>heat sink.

WC> MK> pricey though and the beefiest I've seen thus far is a 600W sucker
WC> MK> along that line. The ones I find most appealing are staight DC/DC
WC> MK> 12VDC input jobbers and the highest output being in the 250W range
WC> MK> which could easily power the mini-TIX boards and drives without

WC>Could well manage my old box as well with one hard drive and a CD-ROM as it
WC>getting by fine with just the 145 watt
WC>unit before I added the second hard drive and a 350 watt used power supply
WC>in anticipation of upgrading to a dual core AMD which will also come in unde
WC>the wire.

WC> MK> breaking into a sweat as well as not being too piggy about draining the
WC> MK> battery in a hurry. At this writing the Atom board I have is
WC> MK> successfully running off a 90W DC/DC ps and I could easily add another

WC>Why so much?
WC>I've been looking into these things a bit and some users are reporting 7
WC>maximum watt draw.
WC>Though I'm not certain it's the same CPU.
WC>Something like 2 - 3 watts idle.

WC>Of course they're also using some strange, to me, power saving mods to Linux
WC>One guy's completely off the grid with a smallish battery and a 12 watt sola
WC>panel.

WC> MK> HD if there was a need to. I still have some work to do on it but as is
WC> MK> it is extremely handy, especially in an outage. I am really starting
WC> MK> to appreciate the kernel's inteldrm.

WC>I had to look that one up though you've been mentioning it quite a lot.
WC>I like it.
WC>I wonder if it's good enough of a driver to have improved on the Nvida that'
WC>going to be supported in kernel
WC>2.6.33?

WC>Doubt it, that card was crud.
WC>Couldn't even handle 1024x768
WC>apparently this inteldrm driver is exceptional on switching resolutions on t
WC>fly?

WC> MK> Works great on both the console
WC> MK> and xorg although I've had some on and off again issues with the xorg
WC> MK> driver.

WC>That xorg issue was mentioned as a challenge in my brief research before
WC>responding to this post.
WC>Apparently you have to have that dead on first.

WC> MK> Probably will try building it again really soon once I get an
WC> MK> active 5 meter usb cable for the wireless. Might even make it my
WC> MK> default machine and use the Xeon guy as a purely development server
WC> MK> with no monitor. I can see that sort of thing working out well.

WC> MK> Life is good,

WC>Would be if I WEREN'T OUT OF COFFEE.
WC>Never realized how addicted I was to the stuff.

WC>Well I've backed up all my downloads on drive 2 partition three so I'm going
WC>do yet ANOTHER reinstallation just
WC>to make some customised changes I've made perform even better.

WC>But not before installing on /hdb1 and getting that one properly configured.
WC>Five hours tops as this kernel speeds everything up even on this old clunker
WC>2.6.29 kernel

WC>This time I'm going to modify the rc.modules first and then compile kernel
WC>2.6.33 when it comes out.

WC>No more ordering CD's eiither, just download the ISO's because they WORK now
WC>the Nvidia and the havoc
WC>it wrought is now GONE.

WC>2.6.33 is supposed to have an improved inteldrm also, in fact Linus T himsel
WC>said he wanted inteldrm incorporated
WC>into the kernel instead of just being a driver, or such was reported anyway.

WC>I installed ffmpeg this morning as it's supposed to be THE thing for convert
WC>video files to various formats, fast
WC>they claim but I've not yet really looked into the syntax in the docs
WC>subdirectory, doesn't look all that complex.

WC>Pretty similar to mplayer syntax for encoding in fact.

WC>... Now running Slackware 13.0
