The subject should clear up what Diddy actually does.  :-)

A tad overkill but why not.  There are some examples of shell wrappers in the
"Advanced Bash Scripting" dealie that might be of interest here or at the very
least give you an idea of how a simular thing could be accomplished.  Offhand;

The above I cut and pasted from the "List of Examples" section.

I also recall the "Linux From Scratch" people using a perl oneliner on the
commandline to simplify what would normally be a sed routine for search and
replacing configurations to gcc awhile back.  If your perl script is only one
line then perhaps one of these ideas might be more suitable to your cause.

I am not sure what you're looking for but each entry can have it's own kernel
append line that is unique to it.  The append line doesn't have to be in the
global section.

Understood.  I don't know how you are tolerating any of this given the lack of
coffee circumstance.  I think a unique append line in the appropriate label's
section might be the solution you are looking for. Also pay attention to each
label's 'root=/dev/whatever' part even if it is the same for every label. 
Other than that I can't think of anything that might be causing grief,
/etc/lilo.conf speaking.
