I *think* it's as close as fido comes. <G>

I think 8.1 is "current", and 8.0 is "stable".

Ya, I was thinking I could search /dev/hd[a-d] directly for the
installation media like Linux but with BSD syntax. Until I can log
onto my I-net again, I'll try /dev/acd[0-4] then /dev/[a-d]cd0. I think the
trailing number is what BSD refers to as "slices". (I just realized where I
can garner a few clues to the nomenclature.) The HD is partitioned like
with *fdisk, but then they use something called slices to divide that
partition into partitions. (Don't ask me. I'm new here. P-)

For instance, this HW RAID-5 cluster is partitioned as a monolithic block
then /, swap, /home, ... is created inside that. As I mentioned on my OP,
Slack went in fine to the same array, so unless BSD isn't formatting the
"slices"....

BP> try boot a ubuntu 64bit iso hopefully shows more errors then just it

Ubuntu isn't allowed in this house. <L>

JB> I'm thinking the kernel needs to run without DMA on the IDE controller?

 BP> what does ubuntu ?

"What does ubuntu?" What does it what? Come here? NO! <LOL>

Come to think about it, I have had to turn off IDE-DMA to install Slack 13
onto another machine, and it does go into this one fine. Back to suspecting
the lack of FS formatting of the RAID.

JB> Can I do this with a boot switch?

I did save /var/log/dmesg from the same machine from the Slack install.
Like I mentioned, *it* went in like [OK... I'll save the simile. }|-].

BP> hint the dvd have a working kernel that boots fine ?, but
BP> the script installs something that does not work ?

Yup... Kernel loads. Install script runs. Partitioning confirmed. "Slicing"
I can only assume works. (There's evidence that it survives even a reboot.)
Formatting reports no errors. From here, the I/O error might be from reading
the DVD, or having a destination to put it. No?

BP> in gentoo livecd there is /proc/config.gz with is the

BP> the one in the livecd

It's called a "Catch 22". I can't read the bulk of the documentation until
the OS is in, let alone use the system HD to do anything fancy even if I
did know what I was doing.

BP> its also nearly new year and some good things could be new
BP> computers that works comming next ? :)

It'll be three to five years before *that* product trickles down to my
price-point. <L>

JB> Short of it not playing with the SCSI RAID....

BP> understandeble, is it hardware raid or some simple raid

 BP> with that)

As mentioned earlier, it's a full blown HW controller. Check the spec on
Intel's site. As MK said "WAY more server than my ability to be served," or
words to that affect. <EG>

 JB> partitioning/"slicing"

BP> more info please on that one

What 'bout?

BP> running gentoo learning more :)

Dropped Gentoo when they made it "easy". <L>
