Exactly what additional risks are involved in not having CD/DVD drives? I'd
argue that replacing these types of drives with ones that can be hotswapped and
use the exact same disk utilities as the onboard drives would qualify in the
risk reduction category.  Heck you can even store iso's on them as well as boot
to an iso without the need for a CD or DVD nevermind the actual drive or
additional software.

I fail to see the benefit they offer and most often only serve to add drag to
the system.  As far as music and movies are concerned it would be wiser to move
them to a better medium then waste good money in a feeble attempt to provide
their associated hardware with a suitable enviroment.

A tad more pricey and harder to come by.  However I personally am not adverse
to it but currently no motherboard here supports ECC so it isn't in the cards
at the moment.

See above.  Not sure what I would do with all the extra ram above 4G. So far
all I can think of is virtualized systems but then the motherboard would have
to support Vt-d and then I'd have to figure out what hardware I'd be willing to
farm out to the virtual space.  Can't see that being a high priority here
especially considering the additional cost as well as my lack of concern for
virtualization in general.

Overall it is a very costly endeavour but if spread over time then it isn't too
bad.  At the moment I have an Atom 230 board on pure 12VDC input (marine
battery) and am just about finished getting two drives in a small case with a
25W DC/DC power supply online.  Should happen by next week as I lack a couple
parts to pull it off today and they will have to be ordered.  Really
inexpensive parts but needed and they aren't here.

Oh well, one step at a time.
