Thanks a *lot* Maurice but you've done more than I could ever hope to thank
you for with your patient assistance and well thought 
out tutorage.

I suspect such items to be available locally as in CompUSA or
my local dealer can snag one as a last resort.

My local dealer is Excelllent  but not especially inexpensive so it pays
to shop his place with discretion.
His clearance items are usually rather salted with gold however.  

   flash memory card and trendnet PCMCI WiFi card.

Per your next reply you say 16 bit and therefore AOK. 

Slack 32 doesnt appear to have issue with being run on a 64 bit machine.

In fact it appears to hold a processor in reserve until needed before kicking
in on it.
  
Internet searches led me to this particular unit due to raves about how easily
it setup in laptops used by Ubuntu users.

I was going to ask you about www.geeks.com Computer Geeks dealers
howeve a brief internet search on those fellows was enough to dissuade me
from sending business their way.

Too bad, rock bottom prices.

I'd had a tower case and power supply, the IDE connector, 2 Gig of RAM
and a motherboard all picked out and ready to order before I inquired
via Google. 

If I can find their equal price wise I can make a go of 
my own commercial computer business.

The above intended machine was intended for resale.

Windows users need *all* the help they can get and I intended to make it dual
boot
with Knoppix 6.4.4 which ought to be Windowsy enough for anyone without
actually
being defective software ;-)

i'd actually manually configured the firewall before noticing an automated
utility in the applications menu to make that point and click.

It never gave me a chance to setup the network card, it just did
that automagically.

Linux for dummies might be appropriate were it not for the fact the very
selection
of Linux shows good judgement.
