-> Explain something to me. Everytime someone carps abotu a "WINDOWS" modem
-> not working in Linus I just shake me Head in wonderment. JUST what did
-> they Expect when it is called a "WINDOWS" Modem.
-> IF the Linux crowd wants them to work in their operating system get of
-> their ASSES and WRITE the Dricers instead of griping about it.
-> IF that is NOT possable them PAY attention, THEY are called "WINDOWS"
-> modems for a very good reason.
-> THEY WERE ONMLY DESIGNED TO WORK UNDER WINDOWS!!!

I wouldn't buy a high performance sports car like a Corvette and put a huge
luggage rack on top and tow a trailer either.

Used to be all hardware was *hardware* and the so called drivers
were standardized interfaces.

I remember that back in the DOS days hardware just *worked*.

I expect that same standard of performance today.

Why should I settle for less?

Why should I let one lone O.S. dictate limitations of my choices
in both hardware and software?

Why should I expect to have to call up Microsoft to reinstall
software I've purchased and legally own because it corrupted or I had a
hardware failure and need to move it to another box?

Why should I have to deal with file corruption and the constant need
for virus scanning taking a rather massive performance hit for having
a virus scanning TSR running all the time?

Sure there _was_ a bit of a learning curve to Linux but that's really no
longer the case with a wide variety of release alternative from Mint -
Knoppix to Ubuntu and so on.

However one thing has _changed_ from the old DOS days, behind closed
doors deals have been made with computer hardware manufacturers to bundle
Windows software to where those manufacturers now employ cheaper Windows
software driven modems, printers and sound cards.

I get *worse* performance all the way around.

I chose to avoid those manufacturers and buy the higher performance
standardized hardware avoiding taking performance hits and hardware issues
all the way around.

This does *not* mean I take an economic hit, quite the contrary.

As I noted a few days ago I've got no less than 5 machines all
operating perfectly well with 3 of those being Pentium 2.8 GHz
on up to 2.93 GHz and none of them has any hardware issues at all
nor do I compromise my own machines performance.

Total invested?
$194.00 as all were purchased clearance items unwarranted.

To this add I paid nothing for any of my software but the first
Cds I mailed off for about $12 dollars primarily shipping costs.

I downloaded Knoppix live 6.4.4 the other day and put into
a DVD drive on my all hardware refurbished $20 Emachines T2984
it loaded into a very Windows looking environment with absolutely
everything
working out of the box, this loaded into memory but not as yet installed
on any machine I've got.

Sound worked, network card configured itself and when I opened Firefox
it went right onto the internet.

This took about 55 seconds from the time I booted to the DVD for the very
first time to online.

When more people were discerning of quality products and merchandise
we all benefit both from better and more economical choices.

There are brands and manufacturers I will not go near and having arrived
at this point I no longer have any hardware or software issues
at all.

I ran a virus scan about April of last year, as usual clean.
The *only* time i got a virus was when I slaved a Windows hard drive
to a primary GNU/Linux drive and on that occasion I had a Winodws
MBR infector migrate repeatedly between drives.

As I'd soldered the Seagate slave having misplaced the rather non-standard
jumper I ended up just tossing it as too much trouble.

For me, Windows is just too expensive, too picky, too much hassle
and takes too much of my time on upkeep.
