Except I *can* have my cake and eat it too.

GNU/Linux

I still play with Slackware but were I too decide to go
for a Windows looking box there's always Knoppix 6.4.4

Now the simple fact is I *love* Windows!!!
What?
Yup, I love Windows.
Why?
Bloatware requiring everyone using Windws upgrade to the latest and greatest
computer hardware, read expensive.

Thus I purchase only used and thus burned in or broken machines on the cheap
and use as is or repair and install Linux.

Linux taking better advantage of hardware resources insures
my computing and multimedia experiences are considerably superior to those of
users on the latest and greatest hardware using the latest and greatest
Windows.

Just one example, recommended minimum software for video multimedia on
Windows, 1.5 GHz, Linux, 220 MHz though personally I'd set it higher at 450 MHz
with a decent video card
The hardware to run it is dirt cheap and the software free.

The trick is discerning the _proper_ hardware, not the most expensive.
In this Google is your friend.

I Google for my software application needs and problems on given hardware with
the inclusive
plus Google attribute from advanced search, the lower the number the better.

This machine is a Gateway 2.8 GHz purchased for $20 nearly two years ago
as a clearance item.
Uptime, identical to ownership time.
Zero problems.

My advantages lie in my local dealership being committed to GNU/Linux
as nothing in his shop is inconsistant or gives problems with Linux.

Now the man admits to making a good deal more money from Windows
as that is where the bulk of his service calls originate however
the man's good enough to maintain his business on his preferred operating
system
which is GNU/Linux.

He has flatly stated to me he'd prefer working exclusively on linux,
dispite making the bulk of his income off of Windows.

He does appear to be moving more to a Linux exclusive shop
though as word of mouth spreads about the trouble free
Linux experience his customers enjoy.
He developed his own user friendly release for this very purpose.

Now my second box is a Emachines T2984, a real slick high performance box
with but one issue, cheap components leading to early demise.

I swapped out the power supply which under rated blew.

All in all I can no longer fathom ever spending more than $100.00
tops for any computer whatever unless a matter of being short of time or
an issue of convenience.

As I say, my advantage lies in the local dealer however I certainly
could duplicate that through careful shopping over time with due
diligence to research.

High performance, cheap stable hardware and a rock stable trouble free
operating system, what's not to like?

It did however take some learning to get to this point
however I'm trying to pass along my advantages, with some goodly resistance.

Example:
Neighbor asked me a few days ago to remove the virus that locked up his
laptop and I said OK but why not try Knoppix 6.4.4, he says "I like Windows."

Well fine, your computer doesn't work, mine does and were I to like
Windows I'd just install Knoppix 6.4.4 and few would be the wiser.

I use Slackware but I recommend Knoppix.
Not everyone has the time or inclination to put in the research
and effort for the learning curve for Slackware thus the Knoppix
recommendation.

This leaves the sole issue being hardware.
Google for hardware issues and Linux and select based upon the lowest returned
links.

But by all means suit yourself Tom.
It's your money, time and you're the one that you have to please.

Oh and i revisted my decision to repair the neighbors computer.
I've told him I will not.
My reason?

I either get turned down charging what my time is worth or far worse
I wind up on the hook doing maintanance for Windows users on the cheap over
and over again.

I found myself faking ignorance and incompetence in order to no longer be
at the beck and call of several Windows users who were taking advantage of my
better nature.

Shhh.

Don't tell anyone.
As long as there remain dedicated loyal Windows users
I remain on easy street :-)
