Understood but if the editor that created the message uses plain ol' 7

Again understood.  No matter what you set it for, and no matter what I
set the kludge for, this particular message will still be 7 bit ascii
characters.  As we speak I am using SUN12x22 console fonts which produce
7 bit ascii characters to the display without any interference
whatsoever.

Yet again understood but unless the sender is using the correct code to
produce the native language at your end it won't matter whatsoever or at
least it shouldn't.  Should it?

I can honestly guarentee that when messages come from here all the
characters in the message body are ALL 7 bit ascii characters.  If you
are seeing ANYTHING else then someone between us screwed with the code
and you recieved a corrupted message no matter what your message reader
says to the contrary.  This I am sure of.

Now that you bring it up, I have seen my messages screwed up as to
displayed characters on some European sites.  If they used UTF-8 it
should be fine.  Same with any message you send this way but then I'd
have to switch the console font in order to get it correctly displayed
since the default font is set to display 7 bit ascii characters.  Also
even if I do happen to have a suitable font for your native language I
have doubts I'd know for sure what you are talking about.  I can
decipher some words in other languages but I doubt very much I'd truly
understand.

So it is possible to do but I am guessing it is a bad idea and I know
for sure that I won't let some silly Fido kludge to set anything here
automagically.  I make no apologies for that and I don't think I need to
send a kludge to tell anyone's two-bit OS what is obviously 7 bit ascii.

Right?  If not then something is horribly wrong.  UTF-8 should work out
fine.  I notice this msged seems to think;

@CHRS: IBMPC 2
@CODEPAGE: 437

which I can tell you isn't correct but given that 7 bit ascii characters
will display correctly with those settings I am not concerned about it.
It all works out.
