Excellent.  I still haven't committed to it as there is still some
tweaking to do as well as me getting comfortable with the scheme.  Also
will need to get the quoting part down so that it doesn't disturb a
certain Russian any.  Can't have that happen can we?

I am looking to trim that down a tad without losing the desired

Offand without looking 72 characters rings a bell.  Given the 4
characters at the start of the line then 72-ish sounds like a good
ballpark figure.  Counting the 4 characters at the start 72 works
excellent for the current scheme and I'd be inclined to limit it to
that.

I don't think so but I have heard of the amanda package somewhere.  I
don't recall anything about it, good, bad or indifferent.

I'd prefer something along the line of the mbox format and leave the
door open for compression if needed.  Given that all the messages here
are limited to 7 bit ascii then anything higher than ascii 127 would
make a great delimeter for individual message division within any given
archive.  That would also make a good counter for the number of messages
within any archive.

I don't detest binary stuff but I don't believe ANY binary belongs in a
text messaging packet, distributed or otherwise.  Also the FTN headers
are a TOTAL waste of bytes given things like the month which never, ever
gets beyond requiring 4 bits and gets 16.  Also what month is equal to
0?  Who came up with that idea that months start at 0?!?!?!?!  Even
DOS-think people start counting at 1 for months.  :::sigh:::

Which is what exactly?  I am not positive mbox wasn't a VMS thingy.  I
forget where I first encountered it but am fairly sure email for me
started out as a VMS commandline dealie.  Also ftp while we're at it but
again am not sure it found it's start there.  It did for me though.
Same with tar now that I think about it.  I used that quite a bit and
NEVER with compression.  Compression was vorboten back then.
