That can and does happen.  Speaking for myself it appears the better I
get connected the less I tend to actually use it.  If it were possible
to bank unused bandwidth and it had some actual value I'd be a rich man
today.

If wishes were dishes.  Perhaps your mind has been tainted into
believing that what is presented these days on the inet is of any
consequence in the grand scheme of things.  To me it looks like a
glossed over version of 'same old, same old' which at our age should be
a walk in the park.  No?  ;-)

I wouldn't know.  I've stuck with old school Unix where lack of control
is not an issue.  To be honest I have yet to see Ubuntu in action since
I figured I was never part of their target audience.  I was a lost cause
before it even existed although I'd probably argue that was true way
back when Microsoft unleashed that cause on the world.  Sounds too much
like 'no guts, no glory' sort of a thing.  Am I missing anything?

Heh, heh.  Been there, done that.  Wearing a lifejacket is probably a
good plan.

That can happen without SMB.  Besides, these days ssh is the way to go
especially for the paranoid, which I happen to find myself part of.
However on a wired dedicated serial port that really isn't an issue
unless of course it is as in the case of multiusers having direct access
to it's keyboard and then all hell can break loose if 'root' is logged
in and unmanned.

Slow on the network switched LAN but definetly reliable and steady.
Figure out what the problem I see is.  Turns out that the kernel's 8139
driver is at fault.  I am trying a driver supplied by realtek as we
speak and that is better although I am thinking of disabling it and
replacing it with a better pci network card.  For now this seems okay
but I doubt I'll put up with it over the long haul.  Might just go back
to the usb dongle or do the pci thing and switch the wireless over to
usb instead.  All things considered I am thinking the latter seems the
best solution.  We'll see.
