Ärende: and the band played on

Not going to happen! Too many are streaming porn over your paid-for bandwidth
as we speak. They "need" the speed more than you and me./-:

Walks in the park is time and effort better spent working on my domicile.
Besides, eBay has been delivering too many SMOKIN' deals through the mail and
for-local-pickup for me to badmouth it too much. Now, if I could just avoid
chatting up the webcam girls....
...

One mouse click *is* easier to remember for an idjiat like me, than a long
convoluted CL or five. On one Slack install, I had a World-map scrolling as my
"wallpaper" and it updated itself every 10-minutes to tell me when Antarctica
or our Great White was in total darkness/light, and when sunset rose over your
canoe. As a side benefit, I had one workspace after another load up *all* my
previous screens of research/fun for the next time I booted up. It wouldn't
bring up the programs I had previously in the terminal in the - how was it said
- ${unmentionable} <LOL> but an up-arrow or three usually found what I was
looking for.

...
MK> Heh, heh. Been there, done that. Wearing a lifejacket is probably a
 MK> good plan.

THAT's a backup plan! <ROTF>

JB> The SMB promises Telnet connection

MK> That can happen without SMB. Besides, these days ssh is the way to go
MK> especially for the paranoid, which I happen to find myself part of.
MK> However on a wired dedicated serial port that really isn't an issue
MK> unless of course it is as in the case of multiusers having direct
MK> access to it's keyboard and then all hell can break loose if 'root' is
 MK> logged in and unmanned.

Well, I just say that Telnet *is* supported through the port. If I could attach
ipcop to that port and just use the two Gigabit ports for internal routing, ssl
could be an afterthought if I convince shaw to give me a static port for free.
My calendar of auctions and birthdays, with a list or seven of my current HW
projects is now on "the cloud", so I have little desire to see what resides on
my drives. Besides, I'm not smart enough to secure the damned spinney things at
this time beyond a good password.

JB> THAT would be cooking with gas!

MK> Keep away from open flames. ;-)

No, MANAGE YOUR GAS! Sparks just increase your fun or amplify your stupidity.
<chuckle>
...
MK> Slow on the network switched LAN but definetly reliable and steady.
MK> Figure out what the problem I see is. Turns out that the kernel's 8139
MK> driver is at fault. I am trying a driver supplied by realtek as we
MK> speak and that is better although I am thinking of disabling it and
MK> replacing it with a better pci network card. For now this seems okay
MK> but I doubt I'll put up with it over the long haul. Might just go back
MK> to the usb dongle or do the pci thing and switch the wireless over to
MK> usb instead. All things considered I am thinking the latter seems the
 MK> best solution. We'll see.

I was going to mention a driver issue, but WT* do I know? <G+D... Opps, I need
to get away from that I-net mentality! ;-> Now, if I can find a firmware
update/hack to turn my twenty-for port "fast" switches into Gigabit ports on
the I-net... <L l/a lunatic>

But I should look for my keys first! <Cha-G>

... I'm not totally worthless. I can serve as a bad example!
