Hi! Ed,

On Sun, 19 Aug 12, you wrote to me:

PQ>> workspace windows. Sorry about the lack of detail. Oops, it's a
 PQ>> 'stock' screengrab.
EV> I reckond that is a image of you on the left, is it?

Nope. That was a YouTube video playing at the time, in Firefox, when I took
the happysnap.

EV> I'll hafta go see if the Compiz Conky 'cube' program will work on
 EV> this XP box.

They are two different utilities, Ed. Lemme check for you... go Google, go!...

Compiz brings 'bling' to the desktop. You know, 'razza-matazz'. It just looks
good, unnecessarily. It's basically a Linux thing but there is/are Windows
doovers that (might) do the same thing. Have a look at:
_http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compiz_ for more info.

Conky is a desktop tool to provide system statictics (& other schtuff) in
pretty-pretty looking graphs & textual displays. It becomes a permanent
program window on the desktop. You can scratch at it all you like with the
mouse; it just keeps on keepin' on (working). It seems to be a Linux only
thing. Check out: _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conky_%28software%29_ - there
seems to be some good info also at:
_http://www.linuxhaxor.net/8-beautiful-conky-desktop-monitor-setup/_ as well.

EV> From what I see Conky allows 4 Tasks that are running to be switched
EV> sorta like Windows Alt-Tab does, Correct??

U'u itself defaults to four (4) workspaces. You can have more or less. Conky
'lives' on all of them. Compiz provides pretty-looking windows & workspace
_switching_ special effects.

Now, listen closely Ed. A single workspace is equivalent to a Windows desktop.
I.e., in Windows you get one (1) workspace to run all your programs in. With
U'u & other Linuxes, you get more than one; usually four.

Typically, I have my TuxCommander & a couple of desktop sticky notes in #1; #2
has Thunderbird going all the time; #3 has all of my VirtualBox PCs; and, #4
has Firefox going. They don't need to be that way. It's just the way I've got
myself organised over the years, and I do it the same way on all of my Linux
machines.

Besides them I also have BOINC running two 'at home' tasks, crunching numbers
for SETI & Einstein (running 24/7, not just during 'slack' times). Also,
occasionally I run other programs & utilities. :)

EV> A few weeks ago I slacked off reading FIDO messages because I wanted
EV> to read all I could about the Black Hat Conference in Nevada.

I dunno, Ed. They sound bad to me...

EV> I didn't learn much, but it makes me glad that there are folks at
EV> work to make things more difficult for the 'Baddies' who make life
EV> troublesome for ordinary computer users.

Okay. Now you've got my attention now. I gotta go Google this.

EV> I'm getting back into the groove now of FIDO things though.

Neat! Take your time, now. Have fun with it!

Cheers,
Paul.
