Hello, Maurice.

Sunday July 14 2013 at 19:34, you wrote to mark lewis:

It's Qodem, not QModem.

"The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their proper names."

QModem was originally for DOS long before it was available for Windows, so you
might want to rethink what you're saying since Qodem is based off of the
DOS-based Qmodem. I know Linux guys love to insult Windows users
involuntarily, but your obtuseness about the "lack of suitable terminals" for
Windows is rather glaring and speaks of your own inexperience with the subject.

If you'd read the main page on the Qodem site (which I don't think you visited
at all and just lied to make yourself look better), you'd see this -- and I
quote --: "Qodem is an open-source re-implementation of the DOS-era Qmodem
serial communications package, updated for modern systems." Can you tell me
where in that sentence Windows is mentioned?

I think you're full of crap when you say the Linux 'terminal' is better. Can
it do all of the below?

=== Cut ===
-- Unicode display: translation of CP437 (PC VGA), CP850, CP858, ISO-8859-1,
VT100 DEC Special Graphics characters, VT220 National Replacement Character
sets, and many more, to Unicode
-- Terminal interface: scrollback buffer, capture file, screen dump
-- Convenience: dialing directory, keyboard macros, external script support,
host mode
-- Connection methods: serial port, modem dialer, local shell, command line,
telnet, ssh, rlogin, raw socket
-- Emulations: ANSI.SYS, Avatar, VT52, VT100, VT102, VT220, Linux, and xterm
-- Transfer protocols: Xmodem, Ymodem, Zmodem, and Kermit
=== Cut ===

Hey, it even does your beloved UTF-8. Imagine that.

You show me a Linux shell that can do all of that natively and I'll eat my
words.

But wait, there's more!

===Cut===
Welcome! Qodem is an open-source re-implementation of the DOS-era Qmodem serial
communications package, updated for modern systems. Qodem goes beyond similar
DOS-era emulators in many ways:

-- In addition to serial/modem connections, Qodem can also connect to remote
systems over telnet, rlogin, ssh, raw sockets, or through an arbitrary command
line.
-- Qodem is curses-based, and as such can be run in command-line environments
such as the raw Linux console, through an ssh session, or inside a graphical
X11-based terminal emulator. Qodem can even be run inside itself.
-- Qodem understands its supported emulations much better than many other
programs. It has a "vttest score" of 104; under a true xterm it even displays
double-width/double-height characters correctly. It can play ANSI Music,
supports ANSI fallback for Avatar, translates both PC VGA and DEC multinational
characters to Unicode, and can handle the UTF-8 flavors of Linux and xterm
emulations.

Qodem has several unusual features, including:
-- The ability to save capture files, screen dumps, and the scrollback buffer
in HTML format.
-- The ability to see all incoming and outgoing bytes in a hex dump format
("debug" emulation).
-- The ability to search through the scrollback buffer, and save only the
visible portion to a screen dump file.
-- A host mode that can serve callers over telnet, ssh, raw socket, or
serial/modem. On TCP links it can even use UPnP to open a port on a home
router.
-- An extensive online help system.
-- The ability to run any program that reads and writes to standard input and
output as a script.
-- Support for both internal and external programs to handle telnet, ssh, and
rlogin connections. When the external programs are not available (as on
Windows) Qodem can still connect to remote systems, but when they are available
(as on most Linux/Unix) then updates to the system-wide telnet/ssh/etc. benefit
Qodem too.

Users wishing to test out Qodem on live bulletin boards should check out the
Telnet BBS Guide list of telnet-able BBS systems. For convenience, this list
has been converted into a Qodem phonebook file. Copy it into ~/.qodem (or if on
Windows, into My Documents\qodem\prefs) and load it by pressing L in the Qodem
phonebook screen.

So, Maurice, tell me again, can your shell do all of that?

No, it can't. You're lying through your teeth if you tell me your shell can do
all of that.
Before I forget, here's a few comm programs for Windows: Hyperterminal,
Zap-O-Comm, Syncterm, mTel, Netrunner, puTTY (no file transfer capability),
Kitty (has Zmodem capbility) . . . and that's just for a short list. All but
ZOC are free. So much for the lack of choice under Windows, right?

OMG, most of those also run under Linux, some even in a shell! Whodathunk!
The real sad state of affairs is your ignorance on the subject and your
willingness to prove it to everyone. Next time you want to sound smart, at
least have facts to back up your claims.

Later,
Sean
