Do you mean without being installed to the hard drive?  If so then I'd agree
but I can't see running an app out of thin air, the app *has* to be somewhere
such as a CD, floppy, ram space ... errr ... somewhere!

Ah!  I think I understand you now except I never use the word 'folder'.  I
think a ramdisk or loop mounting an image file with apps preinstalled to them
might be more advantageous to your strategy since once unmounted they wouldn't
require uninstalling from the system.  However in either case the app has to
exist somewhere, even if somewhere is a goofy cloud off in cyberspace.

Interesting.  I am currently working on a remote sensing gps reciever thingy
using an old eeepc as the remote that has a usb gps reciever attached to it. 
The eeepc boots/roots a ramdisk with everything needed for it to offer the
reciever's data to my main box using ssh to transfer the raw data to a disk
file(s) on the main box.  So far it works excellent.  Also the eeepc can
operate independently as a road/boat trip dealie and collect data to a micoSD
card or usb flash disk (whichever happens to be handy) instead.  So far I
haven't bothered with mapping apps but that could also be doable.  At the
moment I am more concerned about the basic operations as well as manipulation
of the raw data for purposes other than for display.  Street map apps should be
doable though but would require far more than what the eeepc is currently
providing in it's current root/boot ramdisk.  Good data collection seems to be
what it wants to be doing and leave the more glamorous stuff to other boxes
that care about that far-too-needy-glitzy stuff.  :::most evil grin:::
