4.6 How do I handle those tar.gz files?

Contributed by: Francois Thunus, John Johnson

Lots of software for Linux can be downloaded in source form, most
of it coming in files with the extension tar.gz. This means that
the file is a tar archive that has been compressed with gzip. If
the file was transferred through a medium with DOS filenames, the
extension could also be tgz. One way to handle them is to first
     unzip and then untar them:

         gunzip filename.tar.gz
         tar xvf filename.tar

On Linux tar, you can also use the parameter "z" to indicate a
     gzipped archive:

         tar xvzf filename.tar.gz

In any case, it may be a wise idea to look into the file before
actually unpacking it. You can do this with tar's "t" option. Take
out the "x" (eXtract) part of the tar command lines above and fill
in the "t" (lisT) instead. You can also use the Midnight Commander
(mc) to view the contents: just select the file and press enter.
You can also extract files from the archive with F5.

If you see the extension .bz2 instead of .gz, the archive is
compressed with bzip2 instead of gzip. Depending on your version
of tar, you need to replace the "z" in the commands above with
either "y" or "I". Or manually uncompress the file with bunzip2
     first.

  5.1.1 BBS packages

     Additions by: Tom Laermans

There are quite a few BBS packages available for Linux, both free
and commercial. The right place to ask questions about those is
probably the LINUX_BBS echo. They also maintain a FAQ of their
     own.

  5.1.2 Fidonet software

     Additions by: Mario Mure'

There are different ways to run a FidoNet system on Linux. One is
     ifmail, see

         http://www.average.org/ifmail/

which is the official homepage. This works mainly by converting
FidoNet messages to newgroups and email, which can then be handled
with the standard Unix tools for those. Another program which does
this is FidoGate, which is used by the fido.de domain, available
     at

         http://www.fidogate.org/

There is also a suite of programs available from the Husky Project
which use native FidoNet formats. See their pages at:

         http://husky.sourceforge.net/

The Husky Project website also has links to other FidoNet software
sites which are not part of the project.

For those who prefer offline readers for QWK or other formats, see
     Jim Hanoian's web site at

         http://www.kannoncom.com/~jhanoian/readers/
