Ärende: Router/Firewall Advice
==============================
01-18-05 12:33, Maurice Kinal told James Bradley about Router/Firewall Advice

 Well, how do, Maurice?
 MK> Cowtown.

Been here since '68. Close to a million idiot... er people here now!
JB> <L> My sister from Van was visiting, and a small ice storm blew
JB> through. She didn't want us to drive home.

MK> I don't blame her. Even though I grew up and raised a family on the
MK> Flatlands and understand adverse driving conditions, out
MK> here it is totally different. Also you are too dependant
MK> on the other drivers out there to know what they're doing
MK> too, and I have absolutely no faith in that.

Oh... I don't? <G> I'm still alive, so I'm doin' something right. Yes, if the
ice was as prevalent when I neared the highway, it would have been back-road
scenery for me!
JB> Come to think about it, they gave me a Linux
JB> f/Dummies book a few years ago. Glad to unload that one at my buddies
JB> place. It was dated 1999!

MK> The good stuff is still the same (2005) although there may be a few
MK> new cool switches added. Stuff like bash scripting has changed for
MK> the better but the older scripts should still work.
MK> Difficult to improve a perfect OS. :-)

|-P <-- (Directed at the na-sayers.) It sure is an interesting study to be
sure! The HOWTO's didn't seem to show up on this distro, and I-net means I have
to Shanghai someone's connection. The man page on my last foray showed me
NOTHING that I wanted to know, and apropos told me that I was looking at the
only man page that contained what I was looking for. <Sha-G> It's time to
update the CDs, so, there should be more info here soon.
JB> I'm running my Linux on a i810 chipset. "e" is a revision of that?

MK> Not really. The only difference I am aware of is the the "e" one can
MK> accept a TV-out card on that little modem slot they put on these
MK> boards. I have no idea if it even works - the CNR slot

As in a 'puter to NTSC/PAL? Mine does that, but it does it with a dongle. You
were talking about strapping a tuners output into the MB, maybe?
MK> that is - as I have yet to run across one of those devices
MK> and am not even looking to buy one. If someone gave me one
MK> I'd try it but I have serious doubts about them being worth
MK> any effort it might take to get them working.

If you *are* talking about the output going to a television set, no. I only did
that with a 640x480 486, and only to zoom it up from the 9" B+W monitor when I
was parked in front of a television.
JB> The box I have is populated with a Celeron 466, and
JB> (Hold onto something!) it's the FASTEST in the farm! <mediocre G>

MK> Sounds good to me. Celerons are okay. I used to have two of them.

Ditto. One runs Windows w/a capture card, and the other is on the Linux. I
would upgrade the Linux machine, but doubt I would actively search for a faster
CPU for the Windows box.
JB> My MB is reported to work up to just about 1GHz with the VIA CPU, but
JB> a little slower when populated with the Intel.

 MK> Really? I don't have a 800MHz p3 to compare to the c3 but
MK> my bet would be that the p3 would win. However the c3 when
MK> comparing cost would probably win out here except that I'd
MK> be inclined to run them fanless at a lower speed.

The MB here will work with a (I'd have to check to be sure.) 800 or 900 MHz
VIA, but a Medoceeno (Ta HECK if I can remember those code names.) of only
7(something) hundred M would work. Nothing to do with the speed of the machine
with a given MHz CPU, but what the MB would accept.
JB> ... If at first you don't succeed, wave your hands and blow the smoke
 JB> away.

MK> That sounds like here. :-)

... I'll TTYL, Maurice. James
