Ahhh! If you couldn't see the control character and added ,PING to the 
end i can understand how you _may_ end up with XA<CR>,PING<CR>.

In order to understand what may be going on i have sourced a nodelist 
from ftp://ftp.tardis.net/tardis/nodelist and there may be another way 
of doing it. ;)

If you extract nodelist.zip using "unzip -a nodelist.zip" you should 
get a unix text file, say "NODELIST.035". You can then use mcedit to
do what you need. 

When you finish you can use "zip -l nodelist.zip NODELIST.035"
to convert it to back to DOS.

Try this script

unzip -ao nodelist.zip
     cat -v NODELIST.035 > nodelist.nix

zip -lf nodelist.zip NODELIST.035
    unzip -o nodelist.zip
    cat -v NODELIST.035 > nodelist.dos

    
You can view nodelist.nix and nodelist.dos with mcedit but please note
that nodelist.dos is not a true DOS text file. That is because cat has
directed the output as a unix text file but you will see the ^M.

The true DOS nodelist will be NODELIST.035 which is the output from the
last "unzip" command.
