I have 3 identically sized partitions I use for production, testing & backup. I
simply switch boots, back & forth as needed. Whichever is production is backed
up monthly to a fixed backup, the other is for testing. I actually have a
fourth I use to store a snapshot of the previous production (before I wipe it
out testing something else <g>). Anywhere from 5 to 10G each should work. I
spent a couple of weeks syncing up packages and trying things. Only package I
couldn't migrate properly was iRex (broke for later 2.4 & 2.6 kernels, but a
fix may be in the works, I hope). The iRex FTP server is solid broke, but the
client works if you hard-code IP addresses. Bug affects DNS ... obviously.

I mainly used mc and just recursed manually thru etc and root noting time
stamps (anything over a year old will have the year vice time) and copied the
"active" files to a holding area. I then reviewed each one (or it's successor
if loc/name changes) and migrated my customizations file by file. It's easy
when you have two/both partitions as each can be mounted to the other and
referred to while updating it's complement.

See : /etc : fstab inittab securetty bashrc profile crontab lilo.conf
        /etc/rc.d : rc.sysinit rc.local
        /etc/ppp/ : ip-up.local
        /etc/profile.d : alias.sh
        /etc/rc.d/init.d : halt
        /etc/sysconfig : harddisks
        /root : .bashrc, .bash_profile, .mc/ini
        /usr/bin and/or /usr/local/bin : ???

That's all I can remember from memory ... problems? none, of course <g> really
... just a lot of configuring and man this & man that <chuckle>. Watch out for
/etc/profile.d/alias.sh, as it overrides your alias settings in .bash_profile
:( also, I did make some rather tricky mods to mc.ext so it would NOT execute
things when I press enter (I use the mc defaults/enter to see what's inside
things). Holler if you want it. I'm at <a@b.c> where c is net, b wants
bellsouth & a gets fido4cmech [:^)

Lets see, I use whereis, info and apropos to find things (or just look around
in path dirs). I install everything except servers then use rpmdrake/x for what
I miss. Don't forget to do "chkconfig --list |less" then "chkconfig x-x off"
for any inappropriate servers it installs. I peruse the contrib cds to catch
the slackers and re-install EVRYTHING that shows up in updates, those that let
me anyway. Most everything is on the 1st 3 cds, though.

If you mess up fstab or lilo (only two things I ever had cause a kernel panic)
grab the move cd (I prefer/use UBCD/Insert which has mc and auto defines
everything in /mnt for you) ... just mount the root partition and fix it.

98% of my linux boots are scheduled automatically during the day from native
DOS using loadlin.exe and a copy of the kernel. I zip it under linux, move it
to DOS, boot dos then unzip. More than once a straight copy didn't work (it
wouldn't boot) <shrug>.

YMMV
