Ärende: About C=64, DOS, GNU/Linux, ...
========================================
Hey Jan!

That is when PC's actually became a useful thing to have. Before that I never
saw anything that caught my attention. The biggest reason is that I could use
a c compiler on it.

JW> I have also used DOS, not that I really liked it, but using assembly
 JW> on DOS was fun.

I never really got into assembly language. Fortran was my first language but
later caught onto C on ye ol' Sparc station. Also at the time many scriptors
used C syntax so it was easier to think along the lines of C.

 JW> I have even installed OS/2 for a while on this 386.

Older version? I almost got sucked into OS/2 on the 486 but then discovered
Slackware and the OS/2 install floppies got put away into storage and haven't
seen the light of day since. :-)

MK>> Not really. They never did anything that interested me.

JW> Because you didn't give the right command ;-)

No compiler or decent shell to send commands to. Was there? If there was I
never heard of it.

JW> Hey, it was just a little joke...

Understood. No problem here even if it wasn't a joke. I don't have a problem
bashing those toys. I am not the one who avoids OS wars even if the OS happens
to be Linux. I can bash!!! :-)

JW> But serious now, those simple home-computers like the C=64 were easy
JW> to understand and to program in assembly.

I suppose. Nothing that interested me though, although now I might be
persuaded if the hardware was something that could be applied in some
meaningful way. Trouble with that is that there is too many devices that are
far too cheaply made and aren't built to take any real abuse. I like the idea
of handhelds but they are usually too expensive and can't handle going the
distance.

Speaking of which I still need to make up a proper cable for that little
display and wire it into the pc/104 jobber. Had a few problems there but once
I get the workbench setup here I'll have some much needed elbow room and get
back on it. Also want to wire in a gps reciever and use it as a network time
server. I could output UTC from the satellite to that display. That would be
cool.

All Unixie OS's are C friendly. I honestly prefer that, except I am tempted
with gcc4's f95. Thinking about it but last time I checked it is still a tad
flakey.

You had me really tempted with that!!! I did log into the web server you
recommended way back when. I was impressed and did some research into it. If
they had 32-bit jobbers for as cheap as those are I would have probably got
suckered in and installed ttylinux onto it. ;-)

JW> Gho, it's nice to have fun :-)

I think it would be. It is tempting that is for sure. 32-bit would have
gotten me though. I can wait. :-)
