Ärende: Slackware vs. Debian

MK> RJT> I'll get around to looking at it in detail one of these days.

MK>I suppose.

When you wizards get this all figured out, I hope I am aboard to
comprehend it all.

I started in computers with a dinky 99; then Commadore Vic with
PETSCI codeing through finally useing CP/M in a Canadian B-128
from Toronto (I wonder if TPUG is still publishing ?-) Then I got
my first ibm-XE box with messy-dos to contend with.

Now I have used windose long enough to become aware that it is
going to also die; so after failing to successfully make several
linux installations; my IT son, Bob, set up SuSE-9 which functioned
ok until we recently attempted to update it to version 9.1 (while
installing new 160 GBHD in this SysteMax Tiger box) and corrupted
the Win98se partition ( originally managed very well by Partition It
and the Partition Magic manager that worked well for over a year)
and the OEM XP-Home in its origianal 40 GBHD mounted as second HD
in the system) useing GRUB.

So presently I am useing this SysteMax PC with W98se to stay in touch,
while I get my new PowerSpec 1405 PC from MCI with its Linspire Five-0
linux OS (that appears to have a foot in both graves 8-( to the level
where I can daily gather and manage this old FIDO media I contine to
like and relatively safely browse the internet with my trusty Mozilla
and/or KMail (if it ever matures), and continue my genealogy research
and maintain it data bases.

If you have kindly read through the above history I hope you may
have gathered I have worn out several sets of teeth (metaphorically
speaking 8-) over the past couple of decades computering to where
I now want to have my computers work for me, rather than have me
work for them. Hence the desire to boot up a desktop with a bunch
of icons that will go perform a function for me when I twist their
tails (more metaphicizms 8-); rather my searching my ageing memory
for some geek CLI I need to type in to get my mail, etc..

So like billions of people that successfully drive cars all over the
world, without even knowing how to release the hood (or bonet maybe
in your neighborhood 0-) let alone know how to set the gap properly
in their engines spark-plugs, etc. (I can still do that successfully);
there are billions of sane folks that want to turn on their computers
and twist a mouse's tail to cause their computers to perform some
meaningful task for them (like communicate here in FIDO 8-)

If we users (we think of the term in kindly terminalogy, rather than
dispargely 8-) are not welcome here in this neighborhood to gather
some assistance in our desires; please tell us rather politely where
to go.

Stay Young, OldAck.
