Hey Aleksej!

No you don't. If dialup internet then you should be getting an ip number via
pppd. While connected do 'ifconfig' and you should see the ip address there.
If your uplink supports it then it is possible to poll that link. My setup
here allows certain people to do that, no matter how they connect to the
internet and from where, even ppp, despite the fact that no machine here uses
ppp even the internetted one. On that machine the binkd configuration doesn't
have a set ip number for certain nodes/points but they require a password. If
that didn't work then you wouldn't be able to log into anything on the internet
over dialup, right?

It is all about access and the particular sysop and how they choose to set it
up. If you'd like to see that in action then I'd be happy to facillitate that
experiment but you will need binkd on your Linux box and I will need to send
you the information so that you can login here to exchange direct netmail.
Just say the word.

ARS> bforce doesn't work because it's not interactive - at one

Delete it. You don't need it or want it. Not in Linux. Those people are
DOS-think people. You are a Linux person and they have nothing of interest for
you.

MK>> Yeah. Are you doing Fido on a DOS box?

 ARS> No!

Then delete all the DOS apps and you'll be on your way. That stuff is all crap
and abandonware. Nothing of interest to a Linux user since you have access to
the linux console which is the best of all possible worlds. There is NOTHING
better.

Yeah. I agree. I did compile it here just to make sure it works and it did
but I had to use the gcc3 partition to compile it. It does run on the gcc4
partition though so I am more or less happy that I can create whatever someone
thinks they want/need. Myself I prefer the console over any and all GUI stuff.

 ARS> Does Msged work in a UTF-8 locale with working UTF-8 input-output?

I am not sure. I tried an experiment using their supplied encodings but it
didn't work, more then likely because it can't override the console settings,
which is good. However I probably could load them if I do 'setterm' first to
the desired output. That is why I think using a native editor for Fido might
be the best way to handle it and then everything is in sync with whatever the
user decides is best for them.

 ARS> That's why I don't like ncurses.
ARS> Midnight Commander uses ncurses, too? and it doesn't work with
 ARS> UTF-8...

mc uses glib. I don't like glib. Far too bloated methinks.

ARS> You had said "fonts" ;-) Well, for UTF-8, there is nothing really
 ARS> difficult needed.

Right. The kbd package can handle that end. 'setterm' is your friend.

ARS>>> If a tosser converts mail encodings, it's bad... but if the
ARS>>> intermediate encoding is Unicode, nothing is corrupted, IMHO.
ARS>>> And well, it wouldn't necessarily convert transit messages. ;-)

MK>> I don't think that is needed either or at least not yet.

ARS> That's to stop people who will call UTF-8 messages "encrypted" from
ARS> whining for the transition time.

"Screw `em!!!", I say. :-)

They are DOS-think twerps. As long as the links support what you are doing
then I see no good reason not to do what works. Linux is powerful stuff. Use
it wisely and forget about DOS-think, or at least locally. Let the rest wallow
in their abandonware. Silly people.

Life is good,
Maurice
