That is a risk best assessed by the user. They may feel that they wish
to build on top of the Linspire public release. Most DOS/Win users
will eventually screw up their first few installs of Linux. It is no
different to DOS/Win in the respect that you can always go back to
ground zero and reinstall the original system and reassess your tactics.
I can't comment on Dabian but my systems use RPMs. If any dependence's
are missing the installation will fail and the missing dependence's
will be listed.

For a start you do not recompile you compile source code. You do
not have to be a programmer to compile source code. And as far
as i know there is no such thing as a Linspire binary.

As i said coming from a DOS/Win background i can counter
misinformation spread by the likes of you and i hope, give those
who wish to migrate from Win to Linux some helpful pointers.

MA> The point is i am doing nothing wrong. I get my upgrades
MA> via magazines and have my own collection of RPMs and
MA> sources on one of my remote servers. It suits me to do it
MA> this way. Does this stop Mandriva from earning a crust?
MA> Does this make me a free loader?

CA> As much a free loader as I might be using a BBS that asks for
CA> 'donations' (which are supposed to be optional) and not making
 CA> a 'donation'.

Ed like all the sysops who i have had the privilege of using their
services asks only that people help support the service he provides if
they can. Some do some don't. He doesn't seem to mind if they can't.
He seems happy that people enjoy themselves. You however are unique in
that you accuse someone of being a crook for using freely available
software under the same circumstance. You are a hypocrite.

CA>> A quote from one source:

CA>> "You are NOT required to subscribe to CNR. You can use
CA>> apt-get with Debian repositories if you desire, but you
CA>> can't use both CNR and apt-get, as using apt-get will
CA>> eventually break CNR and could hose your system. Using
CA>> apt-get will also eventually turn your Linspire system
CA>> more into a pure Debian system than Linspire OS."

MA> Hosing the system is a risk some may be willing to take. If
MA> a subscriber feels comfortable enough to go cut the
MA> Linspire umbilical cord and go pure Debian, does that make
MA> them free loaders, are they wrongly depriving the Linspire
MA> team of their income? Their original distro came via
MA> Linspire but they have decided to do things their own way.
MA> Does it matter where they get their updates from?

CA> Linspire was generous enough to offer a free copy of the OS and
CA> was 'repaid' for that generosity when one of the people
CA> recommended not paying even the $20 for access to 2000 software
CA> packages tailored for that OS. I would say under the
CA> circumstances that attitude is a bit vulgar.

He never said anything of the kind. Your accusation that he was indulging
in unethical behavior was the true vulgarity.

CA>> It was also pointed out that CNR automatically points the
CA>> user to the proper binaries for their _version_ of the
CA>> Linspire OS so that if Linspire goes to v6 at some point
CA>> those with the FREE v5 could continue to add software by
CA>> using CNR rather than apt-get from Debian's repositories.

MA> We are both slightly in the dark but surely the Linspire
MA> team could give subscribers password authentication. If
MA> they don't re-subscribe then their account expires.

 CA> True.

CA> This discussion of where/how to add to the Linspire install
CA> began because the offer to 'bypass CNR' appeared to be a way to
 CA> hack into Linspire's paid-for repositories.

It only appeared that way to _you_. That's because as usual you thought
you had an excuse to take the moral high ground and put another poster
down.

CA> It wasn't until I called the person on it that he elaborated
CA> explaining he was directing people to Debian's repositories
CA> which are not paid for. Not typing what you are thinking can
CA> confuse people who can only read what you type.

For someone who likes to take the moral high ground it seems strange
that you do not feel that lying is immoral. This is his original post
with no editing by me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
After playing with Linspire 5.059 for a bit, I must say I'm impressed
with the amount of care put into it. Certainly has a pretty face and
very easy to setup for a Linux distro.

However, there are several things about it I find not to my liking:

1. The only file system it will use is ReiserFS. (It can read\write
to other Linux file systems and FAT 12, 16, 32)

2. Obtaining and installing software.

If anyone is interested, I can show them how to legally overcome 2
above without using the pay service. Either send me email or post a
question to me in the Linux echo.

Regards.
