Hello Maurice -

CA>> Desqview did a marvelous job multitasking DOS windows but
CA>> nothing like an OS designed from the start to multitask.

MK> As well as multiuse in the case of Unix. Networking is what
MK> really makes those aspects shine above the rest, including
MK> OS/2, and especially DOS.

Networking is something I never bothered to do. I didn't create
large files (programming). I've never written a Windows GUI
application so everything I've done is comparatively smaller
both source and binaries and easilly moved from one machine to
another via transfers over a null parallel cable or a floppy.

CA>> I was persuaded to return to DOS programming for another
CA>> who had put years into trying to get legacy hardware onto
CA>> the internet effectively.

MK> Right. I experienced the same problems with DOS and never
MK> really tried too hard to network with it, other then a
MK> dialup connection to a server to transfer data, source, and
MK> scripts I played around with on the homebased PC, a 386 btw
MK> which was cutting edge at that time. Without the network
MK> access I doubt I would have done much with it. No public
MK> internet access, no www, absolutely nothing like you see
MK> these days.

As I've said, I've always been 'online' even before the www. :-)

CA>> Linux certainly uses legacy hardware more effectively than
CA>> other OS. With processor speeds being where they are today
CA>> I'm not sure that efficiency of processes is as much of an
CA>> issue?

MK> It is to me but I tend to be far more conservative then I
MK> was back then. I used to think X was the end all and be all
MK> back then. Now I hardly ever use it, nevermind doing
MK> anything remotely resembling coding on/for it.

I fought using any type of GUI until the wife of a professor
insisted I should install MSWord for word processing and gave
me all the install floppies. They sat around the house for 6
months or so then I got bored and installed them.

CA>> Any attempt to 'conquer' a new OS becomes a search for
CA>> addons,

MK> I still do that but nowhere near what I started out doing
MK> roughly 10 years ago with Linux. I pretty well much know
MK> what I want and what I can get away with. However
MK> sometimes, as with recently with gcc4, get suckered into
MK> taking up the challenge of doing something bleeding edge.
MK> Actually I am quite surprised I got it working as well as
MK> it works although it is a tad flakey. At the start I
MK> honestly thought I'd have a quick looksee and then abandon
MK> the cause for later. Must be something in the water.

I was reading a 'blog' entry from the guy who bankrolled Ubuntu
explaining why it uses gcc4 which makes it's binaries
incompatible with other Debian forks.

After many years witnessing the 'battle' between those who used
MS 'C' compiler and those using Borland's 'C' compiler I don't
like to hear about compilers being 'upgraded' frequently. It's
the _code_ that matters more than the compiler (my opinion).

Bad code + optimizing compiler = cr*p binaries

Good code + obsolete compiler = working binaries

CA>> tweaks, and at times tutorials. At one time this was from
CA>> BBS - _many_ BBS. Now all of that is combined into the WWW
CA>> and a few remaining FTP servers.

MK> Looks that way from this angle. I am starting to warm up to
MK> your lynx/kermit suggestion and probably will play with
MK> that later. I am not sure how different or unique that is
MK> but for some strange reason it appeals to me.

If your telnet terminal does not recognize kermit, of course that
option won't work for you. ;-)
