Hey CHARLES!

CA> Eventually 'the whole shebang'. :-)

Shouldn't be a problem. Might be a tad of extra work depending on a number of
factors, such as hardware, but so far I've had some pretty good success.

CA> I have a GNU/Win port of the GIMP along with the required GTK
CA> here on my W2K machine. I am impressed at what GIMP can do but
CA> the 'controls' are a bit awkward for me right now.

My cousin has that as well. From what I saw there is a bit of difference
between that and the Linux version. Basically they are the same but the Linux
version is a tad more advanced. What do you mean by the controls being
awkward?

CA> For me GIMP will definitely require some time to get
 CA> comfortable with it.

Could very well be. It took my cousin a bit to get used to it but last I heard
from him about it was it was worth the extra effort. He started getting really
fancy and was warming up to it. Certainly is different from likewise apps in
Windows.

CA> It might even happen at some point. Lucas isn't really a 'bad
CA> guy' I don't think? He might feel generous one day. :-)

Let me know if it happens. I'd like to see that.

CA> I've always believed that being a point was a bit cramped. I

CA> want to be 'married' to just one source.

Ah! How about the format issue or are you married to QWK/Bluewave thingies?
Also how do you expect Fido BBS's to thrive with that sort of attitude?

CA> There were two maybe three BBS trying to use FTP transfers of
CA> QWK that I knew of. I tried using them but two shut down. The
CA> third, a BBBS was deleting any of my messages he personally
CA> disagreed with which means I stopped using his BBS.

Right. I've heard simular tales.

CA> I know there is one trying out a usenet methodology and
CA> protocol but my offline reader requires QWK packets and I don't
CA> want to use a usenet reader for FIDO messages.

I agree. Also those people tend to go hogwild with kludges. They can keep it,
and I wish they kept their stinkin' kludges too. Man what a waste of
bandwidth.

CA> If FTP had been planned for and implemented seamlessly into the
CA> BBS software that should pose no problems.

Can do here. Not a problem.

CA> People who are new to FIDO echos might also be new to linux. To
CA> expect them to absorb all that new information is difficult
CA> enough without adding the confusion of multiple definitions of
CA> what a 'zip' file is.

Then raw shouldn't be an issue to them right?

CA> For existing BBS software QWK has been around for a long long
CA> time and should be a part of the BBS software already. Not
 CA> really 'extra' work.

But it is. Also it has nothing to do with Fido standards. I thought the idea
was to enhance Fido usage, promote it, etc. What does QWK or any other offline
format have to do with enhancement of Fido BBS's?

CA> From my perspective the 'why not' is that I don't want to be a
 CA> point.

Fair enough.

CA> I wasn't referring to something for me. I have two linux installs
CA> that can access FIDO, have an OLR plus editor, and use ztelnet
CA> for up/downloading of QWK packets. I was referring to a
CA> 'package' for people to use that would get them to FIDO with
CA> the easiest learning curve. From that they can add, subtract,
 CA> modify, whatever.

Good luck with that then. Build it for them and see where that goes.

Life is good,
Maurice
