Hello Maurice -

--8<--cut

CA>> I have a GNU/Win port of the GIMP along with the required
CA>> GTK here on my W2K machine. I am impressed at what GIMP
CA>> can do but the 'controls' are a bit awkward for me right
CA>> now.

MK> My cousin has that as well. From what I saw there is a bit
MK> of difference between that and the Linux version. Basically
MK> they are the same but the Linux version is a tad more
MK> advanced. What do you mean by the controls being awkward?

Not where I would expect them to be mainly. I have PhotoShop
but don't really like it. I've used PaintShop Pro most of the
time.

CA>> For me GIMP will definitely require some time to get
CA>> comfortable with it.

MK> Could very well be. It took my cousin a bit to get used to
MK> it but last I heard from him about it was it was worth the
MK> extra effort. He started getting really fancy and was
MK> warming up to it. Certainly is different from likewise apps
MK> in Windows.

Yes GIMP is definitely different from similar applications that
I have used under Windows.

CA>> It might even happen at some point. Lucas isn't really a
CA>> 'bad guy' I don't think? He might feel generous one day.
CA>> :-)

MK> Let me know if it happens. I'd like to see that.

I certainly will let you know. :-)

CA>> I've always believed that being a point was a bit cramped.
CA>> I prefer to go to wherever I choose to get FIDO echos. I
CA>> don't want to be 'married' to just one source.

MK> Ah! How about the format issue or are you married to
MK> QWK/Bluewave thingies?

QWK here. I used BlueWave until the Y2K issue sort of 'took it
out'. There is an addon that attempts to reset the dates but I
don't like it. After the time/effort I invested in rewriting
parts of ATP I do want to use it enough to justify the effort?

MK> Also how do you expect Fido BBS's to thrive with that sort
MK> of attitude?

FIDO BBS software that _works_ is available - much of it is
free. The parts of FIDO that stopped 'working' were the sysops
and some of the users of FIDO. The in-fighting among FIDO
sysops was horrendous (IMO) which eventually caused some
segmentation then some of the larger more experienced hubs shut
down. Right about that same time frame many of the MVPs left
the echos and some of the moderators began to act like little
dictators. I have no problem with moderating echos but
squashing ideas and/or opinions that are not shared by the
clique or the moderator is a bit too much. No one is paid to
post messages on FIDO so they eventually get sick of the
censoring of ideas/opinions and go elsewhere. THAT is what is
killing FIDO (again, IMO).

CA>> There were two maybe three BBS trying to use FTP transfers
CA>> of QWK that I knew of. I tried using them but two shut
CA>> down. The third, a BBBS was deleting any of my messages he
CA>> personally disagreed with which means I stopped using his
CA>> BBS.

MK> Right. I've heard simular tales.

Many FIDO sysops argue that it never happened. I know because I
can track my messages.

CA>> I know there is one trying out a usenet methodology and
CA>> protocol but my offline reader requires QWK packets and I
CA>> don't want to use a usenet reader for FIDO messages.

MK> I agree. Also those people tend to go hogwild with kludges.
MK> They can keep it, and I wish they kept their stinkin'
MK> kludges too. Man what a waste of bandwidth.

CA>> If FTP had been planned for and implemented seamlessly
CA>> into the BBS software that should pose no problems.

MK> Can do here. Not a problem.

Not sure what you have in mind. There is no way for FTP to
initiate a scan of the message bases and compile a packet for
downloading unless the user uploaded a 'semaphore' file that
the BBS software was scanning for. On BBBS I had to intiate the
compilation then login using FTP for the transfers. Seemed
awkward and time consuming for such small packets as I get
lately (past few years).

CA>> People who are new to FIDO echos might also be new to
CA>> linux. To expect them to absorb all that new information
CA>> is difficult enough without adding the confusion of
CA>> multiple definitions of what a 'zip' file is.

MK> Then raw shouldn't be an issue to them right?

What I'm saying is whoever decided to subsume the 'zip' into
the names of gzip, bzip, etc. was being a bit dimwitted rather
than make up something new/different. I also don't think some
*nix users are consciously aware that their 'zip' is not
compatible with the PKzip of DOS/Windows.

CA>> For existing BBS software QWK has been around for a long
CA>> long time and should be a part of the BBS software
CA>> already. Not really 'extra' work.

MK> But it is. Also it has nothing to do with Fido standards. I
MK> thought the idea was to enhance Fido usage, promote it,
MK> etc. What does QWK or any other offline format have to do
MK> with enhancement of Fido BBS's?

MulitMail, ATP, and probably other offline readers already
handle the QWK format. I'm no expert on available offline
readers but SOUP is the only other format that I've seen
mentioned for offline readers to deal with and if I recall some
can't create a SOUP packet for replies to be uploaded.

CA>> From my perspective the 'why not' is that I don't want to
CA>> be a point.

MK> Fair enough.

CA>> I wasn't referring to something for me. I have two linux
CA>> installs that can access FIDO, have an OLR plus editor,
CA>> and use ztelnet for up/downloading of QWK packets. I was
CA>> referring to a 'package' for people to use that would get
CA>> them to FIDO with the easiest learning curve. From that
CA>> they can add, subtract, modify, whatever.

MK> Good luck with that then. Build it for them and see where
MK> that goes.

Wait a minute. YOU said that you wanted to do something about
FIDO access. I'm just making suggestions here.
