The spelling comment was a jab at the fellow that seems not to understand the
difference between a Linux echo and an OSWAR echo.

Anyway, I tend to disagree with the perception of linux (or any other operating
system for that matter) to be more difficult to install and use than something
else. Utter hogwash. It is absolutely a matter of familiarity and
experience. I made the switch to Linux several years ago, and it was not
something I automatically knew how to use. Some acclimation was certainly in
order. I dare say the same acclimation period would apply to any new working
environment. As an aside, and not to be off-topic, but a recent foray back
into windows was not unlike my initial experiences with linux: Initial
confusion followed by a learning curve.

I am currently a major fan of the Gentoo distribution. Call it a graduation
from the "starter" distributions like Mandrake/Mandriva and the like. To that
end, it seems to me that the linux community as a whole has taken extraordinary
steps to help users acclimate themselves to linux. You start off with
something very much like the OS you are used to, and eventually move on to
something that you can customise to precisely fit your needs. I would argue
the same isn't possible with commercial operating environments. Note how I
cleverly neglected to mention specifics in the hope that the comment will not
be considered inflammatory...

As for GUI vs CLI... it's all a matter of preference. Linux teaches us that a
good portion of graphical interfaces are just front ends for command line
utilities. In other words: same function, different approach. Refusing to
use one or the other strikes me as small-minded. Both are equally valid
interfaces to the functions of your system.

Of course, the leading reason to choose CLI over GUI is the overhead of drawing
all those pretty pictures on your screen. To that end, I would give CLI the
nod. However, and contrary to some opinions I've read here, linux is not
relegated to obsolete hardware. On a modern workstation, the performance
difference between CLI and GUI is negligible.
