Hello Russell -

RT>>> Well I play DVD's fine on my PIII-450 with 256M RAM, for
RT>>> that matter any multimedia files,

CA>> The DVD was a DVD/RW double-sided burner and not an
CA>> anticipated purchase. I saw it at $50 US (no mail in
CA>> rebates necessary) and snatched it as it was the very last
CA>> one in the store that night. No time to check for
CA>> compatibility with my existing equipment. Since I already
CA>> had the drive with me I decided to install and use that as
CA>> my 'test'. The machine refused to even boot up even after
CA>> I disconnected all other drives and I gave up and took it
CA>> back for a CDRW drive that works very well in this
CA>> machine. A straight DVD reader or even single-sided DVDRW
CA>> might have been more realistic but I lost nothing but some
CA>> time and a bit of stressing for a few hours. :-)

RT> Ah, so the drive was at fault not the system, not run into
RT> that in awhile ...

RT>>> but, writing them is another story ....

Yes, I knew it was a gamble - one that I lost at.

CA>> I've ignored DVDs because my equipment is a bit slow based
CA>> on what is usually the listed minimum hardware. Meanwhile
CA>> I've also not kept up with video formats or
CA>> encoders/decoders. I recognize the file extensions and
CA>> have a very superficial understanding as to what the files
CA>> are supposed to be but not enough as yet to feel confident
CA>> about creating video with audio at the most effective
CA>> compression etc.

RT> Much the same here, tho I have played with a few, but have
RT> not had the time to get into it in an depth ..

I helped my brother get his DVD burner working and all required
software but that's where I stopped. Never actually burned any
DVDs of my own.

CA>> I started to create a VCD using Nero's burning software
CA>> and conversion from AVI to MPEG-2 and when I saw it was
CA>> going to take over 5 hours (300 meg AVI file) I canceled
CA>> the operation for another time. I could definitely use a
CA>> faster system for these conversions. :-)

RT> For audio/video the faster the system the better, mostly
RT> because, we don't have time to wait for the slower systems,
RT> not because they cannot do it.

I do think it would've produced the VCD as you say I just
couldn't wait that long at the time.

CA>> It took me some time and quite a bit of experimentation to
CA>> learn how to compress just audio for online streaming at
CA>> dialup (low) bandwidth. When OGG 'came of age' that added
CA>> some additional learning that was required. I am now
CA>> confident that I can create compressed audio as badly as
CA>> any other person can and do it in WMA, MP3, or even OGG
CA>> formats. :-)

RT> Audio streaming is something I'd like to get to work here,
RT> but so far, it just does not quite work yet ... <sigh>

True streaming that requires a streaming server application I
have not done but progressive downloading (what people mistake
for streaming) I can do. The audio plays during the download.

CA>> Some examples of my attempts:

CA>> http://www.devedia.com/dosghost/dos/samples.asp

CA>> I do believe that, in general, Linux can make more
CA>> efficient use of processor cycles and there are more
CA>> 'bare-bones' players to decode both video and audio
CA>> available for linux to use for this.

RT> Again some thing I am looking at, but again, time available
RT> for this is scarce ...

It is very time consuming for just audio. With both video and
audio I hate to think of the days/weeks that could go by with
little to nothing accomplished.
