=============================
On or about 01-07-06 18:42, Alan Ianson did engage James Bradley

JB> I'm starting to make sense of the Gentoo install process, but barely. I

AI> With grub you can press <Esc> IIRC, and edit the command line so you
AI> you can get booted even if there is a bad command in there. :)

This last time, I had a grub> prompt. Not knowing what gives... Debians' grub
now lives there. <G>

 JB> I set hda1 as swap, and hda2 as /boot, with / at hda3 as reported by
JB> size wise. As the MBR was chosen as grubs home, I thought I could tell it
JB> boot from (hd0,1). Should I instead boot to (hd0,0)?

AI> I have always installed grub or lilo to the mbr. I've seen the option

I'm pretty sure it went to (hd0) here, but I likely botched either the
formating of my other partitions, or messed up with the mounting or umounting,
or fstab... I wrote notes like a banshee with the Gentoo install docs, so I'll
next double check those before I fdisk again. I'm pretty sure my first attempt
was the best chance I had, because the only thing that seemed amiss, were those
rectangular blotches on the opening screen. Grub came up fine.

 AI> drive and 0 for first partition, you'll need 0,1 (I think).

I read, that a swap should be the speediest, and recommended it go to the
outermost cylinder. Any opinions on that?

JB> Gentoo. They said 32M would do just fine, but I was used to
 JB> RH/Deb/Mandrake JB> automatically setting up 100M+.

AI> That 32 megs is just for your /boot partition, that's plenty big with
AI> room for an extra kernel or two.. You only really need an ext2 /boot
AI> partition if your kernel doesn't support any other fs type. Depending
AI> on how you build your kernel you may not need it. You wouldn't need
AI> it with debian but you might with gentoo.

Maybe to adhere to Gentoo's instructions, you'd need a separate /boot
partition. <?> At my experience level, I have to take every word as gospel.
I've skipped an "ls" or two, but that's the only diversion I can afford to
date.

JB> The base system is the same, no? Would I require at least a second /boot
JB> partition for it, or a completely new /?

AI> If they are freshly formatted and empty that would be fine. I wouldn't
AI> do it otherwise though, there are sure to be differences.

Ah... That's what I thought. /usr and /home could coexist between two installs
though?

AI> I did the gentoo install a few times, great experience.

Taught me lots! <G>

AI> ... Discoveries are often made by not following instructions.

Not just yet, Alen. Not just yet. <ROTF>

My cousin is in Westbank! You guys better not light up any more Marlboro's this
summer. We had PLENTY of red skies at night a couple of years ago!
