 JB> tide.
 MK> That's the plan.

Let me know when surf's up. I'll be there with bells on. <-;

JB> More so, database, and record keeping.

MK> Ah! Perl is good for that especially for building, and
MK> displaying, custom databases. You can also use cgi
MK> scripting for displaing in table form to a text browser (I
 MK> recommend links).

I had my first look at links with this Gentoo "install.html". Maybe my
accustomed browsing just didn't care for the page down mode, versus the line at
a time I've become used to. It was nice to see url tags embedded.

JB> VGA off a serial port?
 MK> That is doable.

Because both are TTL devices; but the VGA needs two more communication channels
than does an RS232, no? Sure... And H-V sync is separate IIR.

JB> No, no, Kimosabe... The only trouble now is, why Mandrake doesn't
JB> the 'second head'. Likely a kernel issue?

MK> No. More of a driver issue. I had the kernel seeing the
MK> second head but did have problems outputting to it

After the blurry eyed reading, the 'second head' indicates a second physical
vid card to the Linux camp, where the MS world calls a Herc monochrome ?GA,
with a composite out, 'dual head'.

This kernel (2.6.12-gentoo-6) was more than encouraging when I was doing the
menuconfig dance, so I'm suspecting I should be able to just compile the right
'front end'... <AS IF! |->

MK> (/dev/fb1 or /dev/fb/1 depending on the version and if udev
MK> is at your disposal). I did manage to get it to work but I
MK> forget how and which 2.6 kernel.

So, you *are* talking about a second frame buffer device obviously. fb0 was
already in existance here, as reported when I tried to mknod it. Or, am I just
confused so far?

JB> That pipe of a conduit can be unwieldy. The tuner itself, seems fine
MK> Great. What are you using for viewer? Personally I liked 'fbtv -M'.

Laugh... Well, I *was* using what Matrox bundled with it. LDP said I'd need a
matroxfb to have any success with it now. That machine was the victim of my
Gentoo install last night. I'm kinda scouring my polycarbonate for a tuner
program. (No I-net access.)

JB>> still didn't want to tune many channels in, but it SMOKED the W98
MK>> That isn't saying much. Can we pick a better benchmark? ;-)
JB> The Zenith that it replaced... No wait...

 MK> I meant the 'Win98' part. ;-)

What, are we comparing Apples to ... No wait...
Bananas to fertilizer... Er... Ah...

JB> I guess, if you need a file, or need to ream through 40 pages to get
JB> jumper setting... Each to his own! O-8*

MK> That can be a hassel for sure. However I make my own
MK> diagrams once I have that information. Also my neighbour
MK> likes to print stuff so I just farm that work out to him.
MK> I like to call that 'networking'. :-)

Oh... Send me one of THOSE. Two if they are cheaper that way!

I haven't a single printer plugged in right now, and the new loveseat is up on
one end. The carpet is likely to get tossed out before I wire one up too. I
have 425^2' of hardwood flooring to install, and about the same ^2' of
ceramics-porcelain. Sure having fun 'spilling' things on the carpet for the
time being. <EG>

MK> Unix (Solaris). That was the first GUI I ever saw.

The old Motorola came with two *nice* new terminals. They displayed text for me
WAY better than Amber.

MK>> Enjoy! Welcome to the 'club'.
JB> When's the anointment ceremony? In the greenhouse, you say...
 MK> Sounds good.

You bring the Brandy, and I'll spit-shine the glasses. <G+D>
