Definetly not but definetly important.  It yeilded the best quality results and
looking at the bytes I am actually impressed.  I was beginning to think it
wasn't possible to break the 800M mark without some serious drop in quality. 
Encoding to mpeg4 video and mp3 audio is what made all the difference.  Also it
works with everything that matters which is a nice bonus.  Older DVD players
will have problems with it I imagine, but that isn't an issue.  Is it?  If it
is then none of what I've seen lately is going to help that cause in any
meaningful way.

For sure.  I'd use a different approach if that is the target but offhand I
think mpeg4 holds greater potential for that idea as well.  If the main guts of
the operation is controllable as far as compatibility is concerned then the sky
is the limit.  Just make sure it has a sutable drive for that idea as it'll eat
the space rather dramatically.  Lots of ram won't hurt anything either.

I am thinking of growing my own centered around the basic tools any linux
distribution is likely to have at it's disposal, possibly customized or tweaked
a tad.  Mind you I do that anyhow so as long as I stick to that I am more
likely to do something about it.  Also some retooling of the hardware, mostly
the motherboards, is going to HAVE to happen.  Still thinking about it all.
