Hey James!

We got some really obtuse angles in this neck of the woods too. Stinkin'
obtuse angles.

 JB> If I were a rich man... <L>

Me too.

Ouch! I've heard of stuff like that happening, the latest the neighbour's
win98 box crapping out after filling up a 80G drive with temp files when
attempting to record a TV program and failing near the end leaving him to clean
up after it. I don't know if he has attempted anything since then but no he
has the win-tv pvr he'll have better luck with just 'cat'. :-)

First he'll need to get the firmware working but he has been through a simular
situation with certain wireless cards so he is becoming seasoned.

 JB> Yesterday,

Ther goes the neighbourhood. ;-)

JB> Yesterday, the "job bank" connection was down for the third day in a

Yeah, yeah. Heard that all before.

 JB> figure!

Probably a good idea.

JB> I've noticed that in you. Besides a track being closer in frequency,
 JB> and

JB> issue you are going on about?

Mostly formatting, hardware and especially compatibilty issues. It needs to
work for a wider assortment of targets then it currently can. I will revert
back to network installs if the hotswapping harddrives goes south on me. I
don't trust the DVD burner beyond itself and one dvd rom. Too much effort for
too little rewards is really the bottomline there.

 JB> format, I
JB> claim to be a Gentoo devote. At least it
JB> allowed me to do more than install a bare-bone system.

Understood. As long as it works for you then super.

JB> found mplayer on the published disk!)

Bonus! I like mplayer especially with mga_vid. That is too excellent to
ignore.

JB> Sure, I'm not about to archive my vinyl collection to the medium, and
 JB> far be it
JB> for me to toss those 33+1/3rds into the
JB> sea, but I'm sure DVD is as trustworthy, given the same care, as a
 JB> CD, no?

Which isn't saying much methinks. Do you want the DVD burner? I could use the
money.

JB> The board, has i810 vid,

We had one board with i810 chipsets. Also had some booting problems with
certain ram, cpu's etc. The board I have the C3 on is i815's which seems to
have issues with p3's (133 fsb) for some strange reason. The C3 works great
though so I am happy with it the way it currently is. I may even mover the
sata over there for hotswapping but probably not. That thing has enough to do
running and monitoring three networks already.

 JB> the two USB
JB> 1.1 ports. (Just thought I might be able
JB> to use four USB ports at one time. <?> I know, "Not bloody likely!")

Why not? I suppose it depends on the hardware you put on there. I've had no
problems with flash disks and harddrives.

JB> All I can say for sure, is the Celeron PPGA 466/66 works, and the
 JB> FC-PGA 700/66
 JB> doesn't. I'll gather more info if you're
 JB> curious about it?

Sounds to me like a mutliplier issue.

JB> The BIOS there is dated 2000, and I lack the ability to boot to an
 JB> external USB
JB> DVD, (At least.) but there is something
 JB> there about USB floppy.

Right. I've had troubles booting usb devices directly. Indirectly they work
(lilo on a main hd) but not directly from the bios.

JB> I didn't have an external HD to test that
 JB> when I could
 JB> have used it.

I have and haven't had success. Bios is usually the reason. I have gotten a
few boards to boot from usb flash devices but that isn't the norm, especially
with older motherboards even when the bios claims it can.

MK>> No pc/104 or simular expansion on the motherboard?

JB> I'll bite. Is there? <G> If I knew what pc/104 was, I might be able
 JB> to answer
 JB> you.

It might but probably not. Besides the hardware is really expensive and
difficult to come by.

JB> I just picked up a load of 802.11g stuff, two of which are USB
 JB> devices. I can
 use a USB->>ethernet->.11g, or "Pocket
JB> LAN" (an lp device)->ethernet->.11g, or USB->.11g. Right now, the
 JB> first
JB> solution is likely going to be my first
JB> attempt. It should allow me to use the repeater (Bridge?) as an
 JB> access point,
JB> plus allow for a full sized (1/4
 JB> wavelength?) antenna.

Sounds like a good plan. You'd fit in well in this neighbourhood.

JB> Knowing just enough to set up a dynamic host, I think I'll have to
 JB> start there,
JB> and because I have previously NICed
JB> machines with W'95-98, I'll have to start with known working systems.

That should work. It does here but my neighbour is responsible for the win98
stuff which seems to have fallen by the wayside ever since I showed him how to
build his own linux stuff. The corker was the mencoder experiment. When he
saw the quality of the movie and it's new size he was totally floored and I
haven't heard anything about windows since. He also likes the sata hotswapping
idea and bought a different card which isn't as cooperative as the one I have
as far as hotswapping. He was over earlier to borrow an ide adapter I happen
to have and is going to see what he can do with that.

Life is good,
Maurice
