I am not a big fan of gnome ... nor kde for that matter.  Keep it simple always
wins here.  I seem to favour blackbox, despite being c++.  Can't win them all
eh?

Ouch!  That's too long.  Which and where?  Try;

That is all you really need to get started.  Should have the basics, gcc dev
stuff, networking, xorg and enough x apps to keep you distracted for awhile. 
No kde or gnome on that one.  Also planetmirror is the fastest connection here
and I suspect in Alberta.  The university in Edmonton used to mirror slackware
but for some reason planetmirror is faster despite the Pacific Ocean wanting to
get in the way.

I highly recommend it.  Payoffs galore for those brave enough to venture.  Less
is more, yadda, yadda, yadda.
