Hi Maurice,

:) :)

Wow.. sure you're looking at the right sight? It's on the main page, in the
right hand corner IIRC.. in red <bg>...Windows, SCO, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris,
AIX, eserver,Iseries Linux, FreeBSD ... It's smallish type, maybe I'll tell
them to make it bigger <g>.

From their faq: filePro has an installed base of over 200,000 end-users in a
text based environment, with 60% of its customers using UNIX or Linux. This
product has been proven as a high volume, text based, lightning quick database
and application generator. It is available for Unix, Windows 95/98/2000/NT,
Linux, and Sun Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, and IBM eServer iSeries.

People know it's there (customer base), it would probably help if they were a
big company and had lots of $$$ to advertise <bg> But it's a small company..

>Okay. I never heard of it before this. Seems to me to be sort of mysql-ish o

Hmm.. yes, in a sense :) more from the faq:

"[...] a powerful data base engine and rapid application development interface.
[...] attractive is the data and code transportability from platform to
platform and operating system to operating system."

I think that's probably one of the things that make people stick with it over
the course of what, some 25 years? :) It's the transportability.. and of
course the new features they keep adding <g>.. like they've just built in
sockets so that tcpip ports can be monitored.. developers are real happy with
sockets since they can be used with credit cards, stamping, manufacturing and a
ton more things over lans, the net, etc.

Could be :) It's funny.. before we got involved with the company, I do
remember seeing those powder blue boxes in Radio Shack.. that was the first
issue of filePro, then named Profile if IIRC <grin>... We used to hang out
there when we got a chance to check out what was new in computers because it
was either just before, or just after those swell dual floppy systems came out
<lol> before hard drive days <grin> We almost bought one of those ancient
tandy systems then.. then held out to see what was happening next <grin>.. We
both remember never hearing a thing about computers in college (except we knew
those mainframes were there 'somewhere' <g>)

> Cool. Maybe I have seen it and wasn't aware of what I was looking at.

Could be :) It was sold for vax and vms long long ago.. I don't think it is
now though - well the code is still there but I don't think we have any
custumers using it.

Heh.. that's good..

>Funny what searching for one

Yes, that's the truth.. I barely have time anymore to keep up.. at least my
gentoo system is good and stable and keeps on keeping on <grin>.. I'm still
real happy with the distribution and the lack of problems with dependencies..

Take care,
Janis
