Both my lowest common denominators on Linux are 1024x768 monitors at this time.
Yes, if the X manager doesn't make font size easy to change, that quickly
disqualifies that manager from my scheme. On a Slack derivative, xfce is now
preferred, but on the Gentoo box, it's fighting me at every step. Why, I can't
say, but it is locking me up regularly.

Chances are, one script might hit, where another install scheme might miss.
That really doesn't make one distribution more or less capable, just different.
I dabbled in Mandrake in '02. Ran through a few live-CDs, and even gave RH a
run. Gentoo taught me *many* things that everything before it didn't, couldn't,
or didn't care to, but due to logistics, it may not be workable for me. (Long
story.) That doesn't make it any less of a system, just one that doesn't fit
into the big picture.

I break it down like this. The pedestrian versions, try to automate everything
for you. RH, Mandrake/Minerva, Debian are the three that seem to run this race,
and quite successfully. I'll concur, Deb seems to get many votes from those who
know, (No, I aint one who knows.) but it just wasn't working for me. Being so
new to it, I had to cut my losses, and move to something I *could* learn from,
rather than read another tutorial on how to work a mouse.

If RH does what you want it to do, it's right for you. That's all that counts.
If you and your curiosity are looking for something more, there's *plenty* of
choices. If you are looking for less understanding, and more complexity there's
that avenue too. The one thing Gentoo taught me to do, is not to tremble when
compiling a new kernel. Maybe I'm not smart enough to be scared, but every time
I tweaked it, it worked as advertised, and never was I able to crash it. I'm
pretty bombastic too, so I was expecting more trouble than I ever got.

There's *plenty* to choose from in the GUI department too. I'd be surprised if
I had driven all of them, and I've tried quite a few! SuSE is one distribution
I have never seen, but has a stellar history from what little I've read about
it. What their future holds however, may not be that great, as they are now
"owned" by a bunch of troublemakers. We all remember the bullies of the
schoolyard, right? <G>

SH> I'll have to take a look at Debian too. I

It's all relative. <BG>

Snoop in on my conversations with Maurice. He's been bugging me to go Slack,
and I have some pretty basic questions about it. I'll try to post it, as soon
as I send this.

My install only had trouble on some KDE stuff, (Yes, I went to the whole shot.)
but otherwise was easy enough to understand. If you know what partitioning is,
and what and if you want to dual boot, the setup should walk you through pretty
easily. As always, if you want to test drive it for a while, dual-boots are a
minimum if you must remain active with the machine.
