Ärende: new guy in Linux
========================

interfaces,
-> especially newer ones.

-> WC> Yeah, not really happy with longevity here but for bulk static

-> I doubt that. A good hd beats them hands down everytime on all aspects of
-> storage/archiving/retrieval/whatever. Even a hd on usb is vastly more
reliable
-> then either a CD or DVD could ever hope to be in terms of reliablity.

If I had USB 2.0 or 2.1 which I don't and the upgrade cards I've looked
at say nothing about supporting Linux.

OH yeah, solved my DVD audio glitch problem with another application,
VideoLan which can play from a LAN or DVD.
The audio glitch isn't present in that application and it allows
all sortsd of customization like aspect ratio and much much more.
Full screen and a good reason to collapse the tool bar
at the bottom of the screen :-)

-> As for

-> expensive, especially for read/writing although there is a limit to writes.
-> For sure for longevity flash disks are VASTLY superior. Also for the price
of

Nope, I'll fall over one in the trash one day.
Most boxes aren't built like this Gateway.

-> ->> My neighbour did a little experiment with apache that worked across

-> Sounds good. I'd say the Gateway could handle high resolution movies if
-> properly formatted. mpeg4 with mp3 stereo sound works great here. However
I
-> still need to test that on a 350 k6-2 with a Matrox g200 pci card using
mga_vid
-> on the console before I am happy that it is completely doable and desirable.

-> ;-)

I've got it going in GUI with fine performance, console mode will
require more RTFM and HowTos.

-> Offhand I think it is and will try it as soon as I get my hands on a few
needed
-> items wrt a super-7 motherboards (unused) I happen to have handy. I was
-> thinking of building a cluster with them using ide flash disks instead of
-> harddrives. I have to find a proper power supply for that as well but
getting
-> one going should be doable for this particular experiment.

They're making power supplies up to and over 500 watts these days.
Think I saw one at 650W.
