=============================
Hey Stephen!

Apr 20 06:17 06, Stephen Haffly wrote to Maurice Kinal:

SH> Thank you for your patience with me on this issue.

Not a problem I just wish I understood the issue a bit better, which after
installing the card I think I am getting a better handle on. I am not sure at
this writing why it didn't work but perhaps the real problem, or at least here,
is that I was using a 16-bit card (compactflash pcmcia adapter) instead of a
true cardbus (32-bit), but perhaps that isn't the real issue.

I doubt you will and even if you do I doubt they can help given that they've
burned their bridges behind themselves. They jumped the gun as it were. If
you are really serious about putting Linux on that laptop I would highly
recommend Slackware-10.2 as a good place to start. You'll probably have to
update a few things for wireless cards, but your modem should work great with
things as is. Also networking cards shouldn't be an issue.

SH> I wouldn't know how to go about doing that. Is there a step-by-step
SH> howto in kernel rebuilding somewhere?

Yes, all over the place. However I took the liberty of checking out what
Fedora 5 has in the way of tools, as well as their default so-called
user-friendly setup/config apps, and I highly doubt putting a new kernel will
get you where you want to go with it. Again, in order to appreciate Linux and
get you started, I have to suggest Slackware-10.2 and take it one step at a
time from there. I am sure you'll get there faster just biting the bullet now.

Yeppers. That doesn't look promising at all.

No doubt. Unless they built those into the kernel it looks to me like you're
stuck.

According to the pcmciautils docs and the howto the above chip isn't supported
and requires a special startup and /etc/pcmcia database. I couldn't get it to
work other then to load the proper modules at bootup. The pccardctl couldn't
detect the pcmcia adapter card I inserted and only reported that there was an
insertion and removal. On the plus side after installing pcmcia-cs it had no
problem seeing the card and even beeped at me. However it does give me that
warning about abandonment at bootup but I am content to ignore it. :-)

SH> I don't see the modem at all when using lspci -v. OTOH, when I use
SH> pccardctl info, it reports the modem just fine. Also, when I use
SH> hwbrowser, it sees the modem.

Hm. That sounds promising. Perhaps your chipset is supported and it is a
different issue? Could you please repost your 'lspci -v' again for the pcmcia
controller? I think I have an idea but first want to see if my hunch is
correct.

SH> Apparently, enough support exists to see it, but not to use it. :(

That might be whatever app you are using and not the pcmcia itself. I have an
idea on how that might be easily resolved without having to reinstall or
rebuild your kernel.

SH> The same thing I read, but haven't been able to make sense of it yet.

Yeah. Me neither. Working on it though.

Heh, heh. I doubt you are worse then my neighbour. He is king of the
packrats, no doubt about it here.

Life is good,
Maurice
