See, that's the mindset I had been subdued by. If you don't have the latest and
greatest, then you can't use your computer, including numerous security issues,
that again can make the box unusable. I had carried that paranoia over to
Linux, but am starting to understand the logic of experimental, and stable
releases. I'm getting there. To paraphrase a very wise man. <-;

RH is the only flavor my hardware guy will tolerate. I think it is their glossy
installation, and an almost insistence that you go straight to the GUI for a
login. Because he can download a program, and install it like Juggernaut from
Seattle would write it, I think has coerced acceptance from him. I don't think
he'll budge either. /-:

MK> Right. All that is on the second install iso.

Naha! I aint looking for something that can be mistaken for and MS product. I
was saying it botched at setup, and let it RIP. KDE was one of my first
heave_ho. ...To quote a very wise man. <chuckle>

"No worries, mate." <LOL>

 JB> nothing
 JB> from a Lexmark tooth-pulling session. <RRRR!!!>

 MK> Huh?

That's what I said when I got home with empty directories. I was so totally
frustrated at Lexmark, and the hip wasn't cooperating, so I hope it was just me
saving files to a CDRW cue, or some other idiocy. I was so burnt, I forgot to
get anything for the only printer I *have* plugged in. I did stick a few PDFs,
and even a web page about working the $10 colour laser in Linux, so I know
something was productive on the day. {-|[

JB> You know, the easier and prettier they try to make these sites, the

MK> Yep. 'Written' primarily for Windows people who

Ya, the carnival's in town, and it aint goin' away. Try to tell the unwitting
what kinda BS they are going through, when they have nothing else to reference
it to. /-:

JB> Ya, `wget' should be a breeze, and an FTP transfer

MK> For sure. Gotta love the commandline stuff.
MK> Definetly the way to go wrt downloads.

Now, if Lexmark (I'm only picking on them, as they were the latest `glossy'
site I had visited.) would even *create* an FTP socket, and if they have files
common to many printers, I guess the thing to do, would be to link the posted
files to a file repository... I was falling to sleep just getting to the page,
which provides a button that will initiate a transfer, or to open oodles of
tabs, then press a `printer friendly' link, that doesn't point to the html page
itself, but a cgi script or something or another, so saving the link is
useless... ... ... By the time I reach the page with the info I wish to read
later, I'm close to half a dozen steps from logon, to file save fo EACH file.
Now, if an FTP site, I could descend to the appropriate directory, and get the
works. But NO!!!

JB> <G> Do you know of a LDP that encapsulates when to use alias, bash
 JB> ... simple="prog -option=# ..."' to an executable.

MK> You can do that in a .bash_profile in your user
 MK> account(s).
MK> Just be careful you don't alias whatever to a
 MK> builtin command.

"Built in" to the kernel?

MK> 'Advanced Bash Scripting' is really good, better
MK> then the manpage for bash. Tons of example
MK> scripts too. Works great with lynx.

Beauty! Pretty much anything would beat most of the man pages, but I guess I
payed my moneies...

JB> RH, Fedora, Deb, Mepis, Zen, and now Slack. ...And the fun's just
 JB> begun! <BWEG>

MK> For sure. I am sure you'll get there fastest
MK> with Slack. Rock solid in comparison to the
MK> rest and far more flexible given it didn't
 MK> succumb to a silly packaging/databasing scheme
MK> that requires a marriage licence like the rest.

That's one thing that surprised me - those proprietary distribution formats.
Even how handy Gentoo made it, it still addicts you to their server. How much
time should I invest in learning, and faking out a distribution system, when I
can get to the nuts and bolts? I say not an iota!

I hear there are a few programs that can trace, update, or delete a program
installed from SRC, so I'm more comfortable learning a few quirks with that,
than how to limit my choices.

... It looks like blind screaming hedonism won out.
