Hey Stephen!

I have a couple but am not sure who made them. The 'best' one I have I got way
back when, before the camera business, and other simular embedded companies,
twigged onto flash disks. I had to get it from the eastern states, I think N.
Carolina, from a high tech company which was (is?) Canadian owned. I forget
the name now.

SH> I have a 16 Mb CF card in it.

That is where I started. An industrial strength M-Systems one that cost an arm
and a leg back then. Times have changed, thank goodness. I predicted it
would. :-)

SH> it installed, udev said it was trying to disable IRQ 3 and failed.
 SH> At

Okay. I think udev might be the bigger problem at the moment, but I did notice
it could id the card in /sys but noticed that pccardctl was looking in the
wrong place even though it noticed and reported a 5V pcmcia card in slot 0 but
couldn't recognize it as a 16-bit ide-cs which udev also missed out on. I
upgraded sysfsutils but that didn't seem to help any.

SH> I did download it. What option(s) would you recommend? 2.4 or 2.6
 SH> kernel?

Either works fine. However I'd leave the /dev's and pcmcia-cs as is and if you
really want a 2.6 kernel then 2.6.12.6 works fine without udev. I haven't
tried anything greater then that on a stock slackware install. Also udev works
but I really don't see any advantage to using that.

SH> I noticed that it only had KDE as an option, but not Gnome.

Right. Many dist's are abandoning gnome these days.

 SH> Is
 SH> that available separately?

Not anymore.

SH> I also noticed that the docs spoke of

Yep.

 SH> Okay. Here it is:

Okay!!! You have the identical problem as me. I'll check further later but I
think that udev is going to have major issues with the above ... same as mine.

SH> What do you think of Debian? Does it have the same issues as Fedora,
 SH> or
SH> an entirely different set of issues that might keep things from
 SH> working?

Nope. Debian is good. The only problem with Debian is installing a new kernel
from scratch. Some of their apps have major issues with newer kernels but the
basic stuff shouldn't. Fedora has gone far too overboard with development of
questionable tools and libs to start with. A stock Debian install should be
okay but the last time I checked it there was a problem with setting up pcmcia
network cards from bootup. Rerunning the network init scripts after bootup
usually resolved it OR just running a customized network script (bash works).
:-)

SH> Next time, I buy a laptop, I will buy one that lists Linux support
 SH> for
SH> all of its hardware instead of hoping that things will work.

It should work with Slack 10.2. That I feel fairly confident about even with a
2.6 kernel.

SH> Also, I did find instructions for installing ndiswrapper and the
 SH> drivers
SH> for the netowork card (Belkin F5D7010), and it works.

Right. I got a pci wireless belkin working even before 10.2. It has SMP
issues though which shouldn't be a problem on the laptop.

 SH> Now if the
 SH> modem
SH> weren't being so difficult, it would be a moot point. In that it is,
 SH> I
SH> still await your answers to my questions listed above.

setserial is your friend. :-)

I forget how to do that offhand but if you set up the /etc/rc.d/rc.serial
correctly I think that should be enough ... if it doesn't nail it properly on
the first boot that is.

Life is good,
Maurice
