Hey Paul!

That is the same with my neighbour except I from what I heard he went. or is
still trying, to go one step further and minimalize it, which is totally
foriegn to me other then the concept of minimalization but not with kde. I
think minimalizing kde is an oxymoron.

PR> to push this 2.6 kernel system forward.

I am not convinced that is the real problem wrt kde in particular. I still
think it is a c++ issue for the mostpart.

PR> Qt-3.3.6 took nearly 9 hrs to compile,

That sounds right depending on the cpu. I don't think qt is the real problem
wrt failure.

PR> approximation to how much more, err, junk, they added to it.

Something like that. ;-)

Right. I noticed simular.

PR> I was unballing kdebase last night when it froze.

I think that is what happened here too. It was awhile ago but I am almost
convinced that was exactly where it failed here. I never pursued it beyond
that.

 PR> Won't boot.

Huh? That never happened here. Mind you kde isn't, never was, probably never
will be, a mission critical boot thingy here or at the neighbour's either
despite his more neediness for kde. He mentioned something about the slackware
current kde not working for him either so I suspect we aren't the only ones
noticing the anomalous behavior. For me personally, the last time I serioualy
checked was with a slackware-10.2 install and that seemed okay.

Ouch!!! Sounds suspicious to me. How do you have it formatted and what
bootloader?

Hm. If that fails try a ttylinux boot from a cd and see what the fdisk there
shows. Worth a shot methinks. If you see errors relating to overlapping
partitions or simular then that is probably a formatting error(s) and probably
could be fixed. I've seen that happen with win2k and managed to correct it
albiet win2k had to be reinstalled after fdisking and rewriting the mbr. I did
manage to extract a mission critical file from the particular partition and
write it to a temporary drive while redoing the main one so all was not lost.
I never had ttylinux then and if I recall correctly it was a custom floppy
thingy I did at the time but I think it was roughly simular to ttylinux.
ttylinux is good stuff but you may wish to add a few suitable utilities related
to other os's formats if of any importance to you. Always nice to have a
backup boot with the required tools onboard.

Please let me know what works on knoppix if it indeed ends up working for you.
It has been awhile since I last looked at parted. Apparently I haven't needed
it. :-/

Life is good,
Maurice
