Hey Paul!

I think only on the surface was it off-topic. I knew it would eventually lead
somewhere more linuxie. :-)

Good plan. That is what the neighbour is doing. I am not sure how far he got
with it.

PR> I'm going to have to use

Yep. I always have to alter a few things but basically I try and be as
faithful as I can to their methodology. Also I skip a few packages and add a
few that I find useful, such as replacing grub with lilo, but also a few other
things. The basic idea is the same.

PR> I know. Somebody tightened the acceptable syntax, and the older

Sounds about right. Personally it doesn't worry me any.

PR> Linus insists gcc-2.95 is the proper compiler to use for the

Really? Which kernel version is he using? Which glibc version, etc.?

PR> but I've been using the native v3.x in pod. Same

I've started using gcc-4.1 quite a bit lately but havew also gotten more frugal
about what ends up running on my systems. As of today there are no gui apps
and no X but that will change once I am happy with what I want out of this
deal.

PR> Tar was what's running. Despite it's protestations of

Yeah. Sounds like that is the case.

PR> "Have"? No boot loader, it's all squeaky clean now. All the

That sounds really suspicious to me. I think I'll stick to lilo as I had some
troubles with grub but nothing that serious. In the case here it simply
stopped booting and I used lilo to fix it. The last drive I saw trashed
simular to what you're describing was a usb flashdisk formatted to boot by
win98 (faked floppy boot). It had to be repaired afterwards despite working
for a little while.

 PR> I've got a Trinux with a 2.4.21 kernel & packages. Figured that

Should be.

PR> accepted the error of my ways and began doing my penance.

I hate when that happens.

PR> Should be. Pascal's smart and has decent judgement for a "kid".

Oh yeah. I don't always agree with his choices but totally agree as to the
why's.

PR> Haven't heard from him in a while.

Heard from him earlier this week. He is responsible for 'arena'. Did up some
nice docs for it and even the pdf version works unlike broken MS based ones.
He used latex to output all the formats, including the text version. They all
work excellent here.

PR> I took the easy way out and went with what I had.

That works for me. :-)

PR> Can't blame parted. It was hosed pretty badly.

Right. I've seen it happen but always with windows. Never seen it happen in
linux.  :::knock on wood:::

Life is good,
Maurice
