Ärende: installing Linux with eCS
=================================
Alan,

Ubuntu is a pretty nice version. Personally, I have Fedora Core 5
installed, but have also loaded up Ubuntu upon occasion.

AH> A friend sent me CDs of the Ubuntu version of Linux, after I posted
AH> that I use eCS, but have to boot to Win98SE occasionally to be able to
AH> view videos and use other browser plugins that aren't available for
AH> eCS. He suggested I try Linux, as it has some of those plugins
 AH> available.

AH> I've never used Linux, and have no clue how it works. I do have space
AH> on my drive to install it, and play around with it. I have a 100 Gig
AH> drive, with boot partitions for eCS 1.2, eCS 1.1, and Win98SE handled
AH> by Airboot. I have a Fat16 partition that is drive D for whichever of
AH> those I boot to. The rest of the partitions are HPFS - E through J
AH> are two gig each (I've kept the configuration I used for years, when I
AH> had OSes that had limits on drive size they could recognize.) I have
AH> two 20 Gig HPFS partitions after those.

Linux is closely related to Unix. It is a multitasking operating system
which also happens to be multiuser as well meaning that if everything is
configured correctly and you had terminals available, multiple people
could be logged into the system and using its resources simultaneously.
It also has all of the tools to be a very powerful server, although I
personally don't run it as such. It also can be very secure as it makes
a distinction between an administrator and a user. The administrator
can make system changes, but the user is prevented from modifying
critical system files. Unlike Windows, where you have to go looking for
it to set up separate administrator and user accounts, Linux walks you
through that upon install in most of the versions I have tried. Ubuntu
is a bit different in that regard, but you can find a lot of information
by doing a web search.

AH> The rest of the drive (40 Gig) is unformatted at present. Could I
AH> install the Linux to that free space? If so, how would I go about it,
AH> and can I do it without messing up my eCS and Windows? Will Airboot
AH> find it? Will booting the Linux CD write anything to my primary (eCS
AH> 1.2) partition, and, if so, can that affect eCS 1.2?

Absolutely! What you will want to do is install it to that unformatted
space. When the version you install asks where you want to install Lilo
or Grub (the boot manager), do not choose the MBR, but install the boot
partition for Linux. Usually, you will have to look in something like
"advanced options" to see this choice. Then, just add Linux to your
Airboot choices and you should be good. Alternately, you could install
Grub to your MBR and use it as your boot manager and add eCS and Windows
to its boot menu. On my laptop, I dual boot Fedora Core 5 and Windows
XP with Boot Magic by using the first method.

AH> I have DFSEE 8.02, if that helps.

I don't know if it will be needed or not. It shouldn't be. Just be
sure to exercise care and specify that you do not want to wipe out the
whole drive, but only install to the unformatted space. The only
concern I would have is in how much space you have. Linux can be very
compact as is shown by a live CD version like Ubuntu or Knoppix, which
runs off of the CD and doesn't touch your HDD. Linux can also consume
quite a few gigabytes of space if you want to install every possible
option and program. The choices are yours as to what to install.
Again, you may want to do a bit of research before you start so you have
an idea of how to proceed. You could start here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux

AH> Thanks very much for any help. *adh*

You're welcome. Be prepared for a rather steep learning curve and for
some shifts in the ways you are used to doing things. One thing I have
found though. Gnome is more similar to eCS's Workplace Shell and KDE is
more similar to the look and feel of Windows. I personaly like Gnome
better than KDE, but you will have to try both and decide which one
works better for you.

Regards,

Stephen
