The only difference is the packaging. Fedora (Red Hat) uses .rpm
packages. Some other distros also use the .rpm package.

Ubuntu, being based on Debian uses .deb packages.

They all use .tar.gz (tarballs), but those can be messy. :-)

Most major distros have software repositories and package managers to
access them to d/l and install software from.

Some of the proprietary distros Linspire, Xandros, etc. have limited
packages available and charge for otherwise free software.

Ubuntu has about 16,000 packages available from several repositories.

Ubuntu comes standard with Gnome while Kubuntu comes with KDE, but you
can install both on the same system and switch from one to the other.

I used to like KDE, but have found myself preferring Gnome lately.
