[RE: Dell Precision 210]
JB> Now, I just *have* to plug it in to see. <ARRR |->

 MK> And?

I smartened up. <G>

I found out it was one of two Dells here, *without* onboard SCSI.
<L> [F2] is setup, and I think [F10] will be the SCSI channel on
the other boxes, but that's a big guess. Maybe I'll plug in a
monster for service in the trailer. The overhead projector is
already there. <Hmmm?>

MK> Sounds good so far ... other then the 'DOS program' part
that is.

I know the feeling, all too well! I tried to "fix" this internal
modem on W2K, and I fixed it so well, it doesn't show up anymore.
If you can read this, I guess I "fixed" it again.

I'm assuming for the time, the 4, SCSI supplied kernels weren't
passing the mustard. I'm going to go with a plane Jane
do-everything kernel, next time.

[RE: Compaq AP400]
MK> Is there an option to turn on PnP BIOS or something

Nope... It's a floppy booted setup, and if Compaq thinks it's
good where it is, *nobody* gets it otherwise. (I guess there may
be a way to hack it, but the day's too short.) The AP400 series
seems to be geared to the financial job force, or someone that
has to assemble a lot of boardroom presentations. IIRR, there's a
vid card option, where you can run 4 heads on one PCI card, and
you can stack the deck with four of those. Audio input and output
up the wazoo, but everything is an attempt to idiot-proof it by
the looks of things. Guess they weren't expecting my type. (-;

MK> proved to be the best with 2.6 kernels, as well as the few
MK> 2.4 kernels I had going on the Tyan. That should solve
MK> your IRQ issues methinks if you also turn that on in the
MK> kernel (heck turn all PnP stuff on in there while you're at
 MK> it).

JB> Then, every setting seems tossed out.

 MK> See above.

I think I'll leave the Compaq with W2K only. The Dell 210 has
Slack and 2K, plus I'd like to Slack the rackmount.

[RE: Boosted display panel]
JB> and there it was! They were at least refined enough to *not*
bust it.

MK> Cool. The only way it could have worked out better is if
MK> they returned it where they got it from or not taken it in
 MK> the first place.

That was something I was never expecting to see again. As the
police knew soon, and the pawn system is pretty tight with hot
goods, and the market for hot overhead projection displays is
admittedly slim... I'd have payed money to watch them try to
figure out what it was. <-|

MK> Sounds like you know how to have fun.

Either kickin' stuff up, or trying to wipe it off the boots.
Either way, I'm in *it* every day.

[RE: Nortel/MS "cooperate"]
MK> I guess they must trust MS to look after their legal issues.

I think Nortel has no other choice but to bend over, and take it
like a man.

[RE: Dell lacks "PNP" anything too]
MK> I think the PnP BIOS might straighten that out.

You can call it anything you want, but the Dell looks like a
no-go too. Two pages total of BIOS settings, and not a one
mention of PNP. I was actually having all sorts of success with
the other boxes, with turning control over to PnP, but these SMPs
- not a one so far allows me to turn it off.

 JB> Sportster started playing stupid...

MK> Always something. Is that an external serial one?

No... Internal. I'll put money on it, that the flash ROM was
scrambled. "ATI<#s>" showed some pretty bizarre output.

JB> able to assign any upper IRQs there.

 MK> PnP BIOS methinks.

If only... What're you gonna do, eh?

JB> visually distinguishes a Xeon, over any other Slot 1 CPU?

MK> I forget offhand but if I recall correctly p3 xeons are
MK> slot 2. In other words, exactly the same but totally
 MK> different. :-)

That would make sense! <ROTF> I saw a TV add for Xeon equipped
boxes the other day, so maybe it's more a core logic than an I-O
protocol?

MK> Me too but at the time a quad xeon was perhaps too much
MK> bang for my needs no matter how great of a deal.

If you can part it out for a profit, I have a hard time crying
over stuff.

MK> Me too, or better yet nothing. The nvidia one here is
attached to the
MK> motherboard so it didn't really cost anything given it
MK> doesn't matter to me. What bothers me is the other stuff,
MK> such as the two pci slots, seem out of touch with what is
MK> plugged into them, such as a matrox g200 pci card.

Huh??? The PCI bus doesn't report it as being there? Time to
clean the contacts?

MK> Something is goofey there. Also am running into a usb
MK> cardreader problem wrt hotswapping flashdisks but if I make
MK> usb_storage modular then that fixes that issue up ... I
MK> think. Haven't tried read/writing yet and that might still
MK> be an issue. At the moment I am not too concerned about it
MK> as it might get left behind (cardreader) in favour of a
MK> external one just wired directly into a usb hub instead. I
MK> think that is better for my purposes for such a thing in
 MK> the first place.

Hey... Whatever floats your boat. I've a USB camera I've been
meaning to toy with on Slack, and an RS232 cable to day-timer
I've been planning to bash out a few conversions for. Inevitably,
it will be hardwired to accept its own version of delimited text,
I'm sure that should prove entertaining.

But for right now, I have two 6V gel cell batteries hooked up to
a 12V wall wart, but uncharacteristically, I actually have a fuse
between aem. Oh, and I plugged in the last anaesthesia
cart, to charge up 60V of gel cells in it. What a noise that
thing makes when there's no O2 pressure. <L>

MK> 98 or 95) and I managed to use 'cat' and 'setserial' to
MK> output all the proper data from it with no problems 0
MK> whatsoever. He wasn't at all happy about that. :-)

I'll repeat below:
  JB> Ungrateful, so and so...

<L>
MK> Yep. I know the type.

And the universe is as it should be.

... James
